[TRANS] NCT U (Ten, Taeyong) Interview for ‘Dazed’ May 2018 Issue!
10:21 PM. How are you guys feeling?
TEN: I’m a little tired but I feel good. Today’s shoot was very new and fun. You guys kept telling me not to act cool. (Laugh) I was a bit shocked at the beginning but in the end, I started to get more comfortable.
Taeyong: I originally really like taking pictures. When we were filming, I was told more comfortable, relaxed expressions and poses would be better than the usual, familiar ones. It was my first time shooting like this so I’m very curious as to how it will turn out. It was interesting.
The 39th Floor, a suite room. It’s a good place to take pictures of your guys’ relaxed faces.
Taeyong: On top of the place being a hotel, the music, the atmosphere, and the speed especially were all very good. It made it very comfortable. A while ago, I even had a short thought that this wasn’t Korea. It felt like I was away on a trip. When will I get a chance like this again? (Laugh)
Ten: It was to the point that I forgot this was a shoot. It just felt like I was alone in my room. I even got lost in my own thoughts.
As the shoot progressed, it felt as if Taeyong got brighter and Ten settled down more.
Taeyong: People close to me and my fans will know, but as I get more tired, my tension goes up. I hit maximum when almost all the work is done. That’s probably why it seemed like that.
Ten: I’m the type to be really excited and nervous from the beginning. I get more relaxed as time goes on. Later it feels likes my true side came out. Most of the time, I’m the type to have a lot of deep thoughts.
Lately, you guys have been spending more time in hotels than your homes, right?
Taeyong: Yes. Hotels are nice too but my house is much more comfortable. Hotels are more convenient. In hotels, the things you can do are already decided for you, like resting. I like that part.
Ten: In hotels, I can take deep sleeps without any thoughts.
I like all sides of your duet, ‘Baby Don’t Stop’.
Taeyong: I have a bit of regret that I can do better now after all the promotions are over. But that’s not surprising, right? Ten and I are taking all this in with open minds so we had no problems understanding and learning all of it. It was very free. Duets and choreography are very different when you make a stage and dance on it. In choreography, there’s a lot of set rules but for duets, all you need to do is trust each other. Trusting your partner while in tune with them can make a really cool stage. Ten and I could make it possible.
“Trust” is a word that sounds very big. Mature too.
Taeyong: It’s not a word I usually use, it just came out now. I thought it’s a word that could explain our stage well.
You two have different dancing styles, right?
Taeyong: Definitely. If you watch our dance practices you can clearly see that we’ve got different tastes and standards. I think the song itself is important. The beat. Next is the contour. Ten is a bit different.
Ten: I think I speak with my body when I’m dancing. Rather than being technical, I’d like to imagine that I’m like water or wind. That’s what I want to express.
That’s very philosophical.
Ten: That’s right. I think that’s more important. Than being technical.
When did you start to dance? Since you were 10 years old?
Taeyong: Since I was 18. My dance teacher used to say that I’m like a blank canvas a lot. It really screwed up my confidence. I thought it’s a bad thing. It sounded like I had no charm. Now I know how much of a compliment it is to be called a blank canvas. I’ve drawn something on that canvas now and I have a sense of persistence and confidence in dancing.
Are you someone with a lot of pride, Taeyong?
Taeyong: Extremely. I’ve been trying my best to change that. I want to become someone who can give in. In fact, I’ve got to know that’s how you win.
Ten, do you cry a lot?
Ten: Me? A little bit? Rather than crying a lot, it’s… Yeah, I cry a lot (laughs)
Your eyes and faces look even better on camera. Strong and sharp.
Taeyong: I’m not too sure about my face. Honestly, I hear that I’m handsome and that I grew up a lot. (laughs) And I hate it. I’d rather be acknowledged for my abilities than looks. These days I’m trying to love my face, my body and myself. I believe that I must love myself in order to love others.
Ten: Handsome or ugly, his face is his identity. It’s just who he is.
Does Ten like his face?
Ten: Yes, I like it. Or rather than being satisfied, I just say “This is who I am, this is me”.
Then, what do you think about the summer?
Ten: Suddenly? (laughs) It’s nice, the summer
Taeyong: Me too, I like the summer.
Then, do you think May is considered summer of spring?
Taeyong: We just came back from Japan last week, and the cherry blossom season is already coming to its end but in Korea, it’s just getting started. So I had this thought, why do we have to divide the seasons with our head. I think we can just feel it with our body instead. I just wish we could see the sun well (laughs).
Ten: In Thailand, where I grew up, there are only two seasons, rainy days and very hot days. (laughs) So maybe that’s why I don’t really pay a lot of attention to the changing seasons. When it’s hot, dress thinly. When it’s cold, dress thicker. It’s just adapting.
How would it be if we meet again 10 years later?
Taeyong: I like that very much. I appreciate such opportunities
Ten: Me too, I always like taking pictures. Let’s make it as fun as today.
