imagine having your own personal hater who's been assigned to you by fate and he is a tiny little clown who won't stop following you around and yammering about your imminent demise and worst of all you love him dearly
once again compiling a bunch of both my finnish mythology and folklore related stuff with finnish fairytale illustrations!
Doodled some young Fitz and I think I finally managed to make him look like I imagined him while reading!

“Bottlecaps”
My submission for ArtOrder’s Tiny Dragons project! This was made with my usual mess of watercolor, ink, and colored pencil on 8x8″ hotpress watercolor paper…this time I really tried to pin down the value structure of the whole piece, and I’m feeling good about that aspect of it. :D
Prints available here.
I can’t… it’s… too cute…

"In the space of a sundown, you show me the wide world from a horse’s back, and the soul of the world within my own walls" - Fool's Errand
🍊- prints available here!
It will never stop being funny to me how everyone knows Fitz and the Fool are gay for each other except the author.
As an aromantic asexual i look at them and kinda flip wildly between "well it's nice to see representation for queerplatonic relationships where people can be each others most important person even though they don't want to rub genitals" and "yeah those are some sexual homos alright"
I'm on my first read through of Realm of the Elderlings and as a little personal project for myself, I'm taking a scene or small moment from each book in the series and turning it into a comic spread.

I think I'll forever be chasing the high I felt while reading Fool's Errand for the first time. I could have chosen any number of scenes to panel but it just had to be The Reunion. Pg 99-105 changed my brain chemistry.

He was a slender youth, but just as the lightness of his horse prompted one to think of swiftness, so did his slimness call to mind agility rather than fragility. His skin was a sun-kissed gold, as was his hair, and his features were fine. The tawny man approached silently save for the rhythmic striking of his horse's hooves. When he drew near, he reined in his beast with a touch, and sat looking on me with amber eyes. He smiled.
Something turned over in my heart.
Highlighting this panel because I cried while drawing it. I love seeing my boys happy!!!!!
I recently encountered our elderly neighbour's granddaughter(?) in the elevator, and learned that she's one of those people who refer to a dog as "hän". I started thinking about pronouns. While a lot of western european languages have gendered pronouns, finnish just doesn't do that. Written finnish has two separate pronouns, "hän" - he/she/they for humans and any being that can be considered a person, and "se" - "it" for objects and animals. Many finns who are awkward with the english rules startle people by referring to a beloved pet as "it", because they don't quite notice the difference in tone that it has in english - that's what they've learned in school is the pronoun for animals in written finnish, so they apply the same principle.
So while this is how it works in written finnish, very few dialects of spoken finnish actually regularly use "hän", as it comes off as far too formal, and refer to people regardless of who they are as "it". The pronoun "hän" is too formal, to the point that people don't even use it to refer to anyone as a sign of respect unless they're being sarcastically over-polite - much like one would sarcastically curtsy or bow at a person of authority they have absolutely zero respect for. As a matter of fact I've only ever seen the two gestures done in the same context. Finns can be slavishly obedient but they don't bow for anyone.
The only other context I've heard "hän" being used in a normal conversation are religious people referring to god, as a sign of reverence. God is never "it", even in the same sentence where your own mother is. And the other one is for beloved pets. Cats, however, do sometimes get the double-context, being sarcastically referred with the honorary pronoun while also being a pet. Everyone knows you're talking about a cat if you're saying something like "Hänelle ei nyt uusi hiekka kelvannut niin Hän päätti paskantaa lattialle" - "She was displeased with the new kitty litter so She decided to shit on the floor."
Babies, also, often get a sort of affectionate "hän", in my experience - like, when assigning conscious thoughts, behaviours and opinions to a fresh two week old person who doesn't really have them. "Hän sanoi/He said" when talking about an infant who doesn't speak yet, etc.
In a side note, though, I'm somewhat reluctant to translate "se" as "it", exclusively. Se originally means objects, humans and animals equally. Hän is a relatively new addition to the written language and the division between se and hän feels rather artificial. I know what the modern dictionaries say about it, but i disagree and champion the all-purpose se.

In 2023, two elections will be held in Finland. The Finnish Parliamentary elections, as well as the elections for the Saami parliament in Finland. One of these elections will be free. The other will not.
The Saami parliament is the autonomous representative body for the indigenous Saami people. Its functions and purpose along with its elections are determined by the Saami Parliament Act.
For a decade, the Saami have been working to revise the Saami Parliament Act, which directly violates our rights to self-representation and self-determination.
We do not get a say in how our elections are held and who gets to vote in them. The state of Finland denies us the right to develop our own democracy on our own terms.
Thanks to the Finnish chokehold on our elections, the Saami have seen a rise in anti-indigenous sentiments and anti-Saami policies, with non-Saami candidates running in our elections with a clear intention to destabilize and delegitimize our parliament.
In February of 2023, in spite of the recommendations of the UN Human Rights Committee, the Finnish parliament decided not to revise the Saami Parliament Act.The Saami in Finland will now be forced to endure elections that are out of our own grasp. We risk losing our own parliament.
By wilfully attempting to influence an autonomous indigenous parliament, Finland is actively violating our human rights.
We’ve tried everything. Please help us.
What is happening?
The Sami are an indigenous people who live in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, who has historically faced discrimination and cultural genocide and still do today. Sami activists are currently trying to shut down the Norwegian government to protest Human Rights violations that are happening at Fosen, where a windmill farm is hindering their traditional reindeer herding.
How to help:
Educate yourself on the Sami people and their history
Support and share their protests online
Participate in support rallies and show up and support their protests in Oslo if you can
Email the Norwegian minister of oil and energy
Donate money to the activist to cover arrest fees for those who have been detained
Sign the Amnesty petition
