I wanted to ask german speakers who have read what little fritz wrote in german-- does the way he use the language indicate a lack of comfort with it, in the sense that it's often misspelled and grammatically "jumbled"? Do you remember specific things in his writing which indicate this? Sorry if this is a weird question, but I'm curious about it and I'm veeeeery early into my whole learning german journey so I can't judge for myself

Rococo Portrait Gallery

It took a little longer than I had hoped, but it is finally finished: The Rococo Portrait Gallery! My goal was to create a set that could furnish an entire 18th-century palace without a single portrait being repeated. To achieve this, I collected 355 portraits from various European kingdoms and principalities:

Size S: 75 portraits

Size M: 100 portraits

Size L: 100 portraits

Size XL: 80 portraits

The frederician rococo frames are based on four examples found in the Picture Gallery at Sanssouci. For the portraits themselves, I limited the selection to works dating from ca. 1710 to 1775. Owning portraits of various foreign royals and nobles was by no means unusual. There were many possible reasons for this, including marriage alliances, family connections, diplomatic gifts, or simply a passion for collecting art.

So don't be afraid to mix and match them however you like - Enjoy! :)

This may be a long shot but: can anyone direct me to correspondence conducted between masters and servants in 18th century europe or the americas? I would be especially grateful if said master was also a monarch/ruler in general. I'm asking because while reading* the fritz and fredersdorf letters I was struck by what I perceived as... I don't know, almost erotic language at times in how fredersdorf expressed his submission? Like when he said "I shall have the honour to kiss your jacket". But unfortunately I don't have enough context for what was "normal language" between masters and servants of that period and so this may just be me projecting. If anyone could help me out I'd be grateful!

*"reading" actually I had to copy-paste everything to google translate bc I don't speak German and I'm sure that experiencing them in this manner impacts everything. esp considering google is just befuddled by 18th century german spelling.

Just an FYI—the original intention of this post was to challenge the way people say only friends, as though friendship is somehow lesser than other forms of love. As if being deeply known, cherished, and chosen by another person could ever be a small thing. Normalize profound platonic love. Some of the most fulfilling, transformative, and enduring relationships we will ever have are friendships. 🫶🏼
