there's something interesting I picked up on 3 of the fritz and fredersdorf's letters that I think subtextually gives some insight into their relationship (unfortunately I do not have them in front of me rn but I will look into this to cite them properly and will update the post). i believe around April 1747 fredersdorf had to write A LOT of very short letters in 1 day (or in the span of a few days) and iirc he even apologized for sending so many short letters in such a short timespan but for whatever reason he couldn't get everything in just one longer letter. anyway fritz eventually replies "I can't answer every single letter if you write 20 a day!". he did sound quite exasperated but I've only read the letters through google translate so this could be misleading.

fredersdorf then waits *several* days before sending another letter. this letter-- 1st after fritz's outburst-- feels different than the ones immediately before it, in that it goes more or less like this: 1st paragraph talks about keyserlingk's daughter (keyserlingk was a very close friend of fritz who had died only a few years before) and how she's adorable and chatty just like her dad. 2nd paragraph mentions state business. the 3rd paragraph I forgot what it says exactly but it's iirc not state business and felt like something that would put fritz in a good mood.

I found this very interesting because it very much feels like he received that short and seemingly very cross reply and maybe took the time to go "okay, he's kind of pissed. so maybe I should prioritize the work that doesn't have to go to him directly and not bother him for a bit so he can chill out. and when I *have* to write to him I'll sandwich the state business in between an update on the adorable daughter of his beloved friend and something that will definitely put him in a good mood". considering that a royal favorite's position was dependent on the monarch being satisfied with them (that goes even more when the relationship is romantic as i believe it was for them, but also applies to platonic favorites) and fritz was known for his outbursts of temper i'd say this was a pretty smart move. and don't get me wrong I ship fritz/fredersdorf pretty hard and from what little we *can* and do know I think there was a lot of love there, BUT there's also this vast power differential which is exacerbated by the fact that bc fredersdorf was a commoner any power that he had (and he did accrue a lot of power as a kind of unofficial prime minister of prussia from around 1740 to 1757) was entirely dependent on fritz's favor.
