Sneaking around wasn’t his thing so all of this was not sitting well with him.

Haymitch did it, though; he kept on hiding from the Capitol, dragged Effie beyond the mike’s reach, accepted when Beetee would wire up a new blocker that would keep them safe, if only for a moment. But for how long? They couldn’t keep it up forever, and he k n e w  ….

One day, after the kids were training for the 75th Games and already fell asleep, he pulled Effie to the side of the main living space of 12′s fancy ass penthouse and looked more solemn than usual.

“Ef, have ya ever thought that maybe this ain’t gonna last much longer?”

Their friendship, the oddly romantic courtship they’d developed that had been strictly gentlemanly on his part — he wasn’t sure — he knew that soon, he’d have to leave. And that wasn’t something a person like Haymitch could do easily.

Whatever it was that came onto Haymitch that had him pull her aside to ask that unnervingly vague question, Effie did not know or like. It must have something to do with the Games  — everything did  —, but the children (well, Katniss and Peeta are hardly that anymore, but she couldn’t quite see them as anything but) were not in on it.

“What isn’t, Haymitch?”

She spoke softly, but there was that twinge of annoyance that Effie knew Haymitch would pick up on even as the escort put on her best smile for the other people present.

Soon the Games would begin, and with them came the harsh reality that they’d have to say goodbye to at least one of the two, Katniss or Peeta, if not both. There was no way they could pull off another trick.

She was not looking forward to it.
