Felicity, Monty and Percy I read this book during my fight and jetlag and I fell in love with it!

Does it annoy anyone else when authors of historical fiction basically just insert a protagonist with modern ideas and personality traits that are radically in opposition to what people from that era would have actually been like. Like, I'm rereading A Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee for the third time and just bought my own copy bc it's fun and the plot is cool, I like the book - but Henry's in Paris and narrates he barely speaks the language.
This! Is! Not! Feasible! He's the son of a gentleman - a French gentleman no less! French was REQUIRED for his social class in his era and probably would have been spoken at home at least sometimes, even if your parents weren't French. It's like if a historian from the year 2400 wrote a novel set in 2021 about a Yale graduate who can barely read (no shade on people with dyslexia or other legitimate reading issues, who of course can and do go to Yale, you know what I mean).
Henry narrates that bowing to another nobleman feels bizarre and like a strange piece of acting to him ... 2400s historian would write "I met a friend of a friend and smiled as I said hello. So unused to this!â Like! Come on! He would have bowed as a matter of course to half or more of the people he associated with. He's supposed to have a devil may care attitude ok yeah and he's sooo over the social scene but like no, in real life it would have been too automatic for him to not do and also he would have probably started a war.
Or when Felicity is bad at sewing - she would have spent literally hours of each day sewing since she was very little. Yeah she hated sewing because she wants to be a doctor and more importantly to show the modern reader, who btw devalues sewing, that She's Not Like Other Girls, but sewing was so ubiquitous and such an ingrained requirement of life even for noblewomen that she would have been good at it even if she didn't love it.
Like. It's just so lazy and strange to write historical novels with such disregard for ... history lol
(note: ok I GET that maybe all of this put together is meant to be over the top and more of a wink to the modern reader in this book especially, it's not supposed to be believable. But this type of writing shows up EVERYWHERE in historical fiction and I'm sick of it.)

devilâs advocate - maybe the important thing here is that these are character defining details rather than historical ones. like, i htink monty **is** that dyslexic kid in yale who can hardly read because his dad bought his way there. at least thatâs how I always read it.Â
i dunno, i think if youâre reading this book to nitpick the historical details, youâre here for the wrong reasons.Â
also i donât remember felicity being bad at sewing i know thatâs not the point but all i remember is her sewing up her own arm.Â
