Let me be your fortress

Tiny tears burned down the younger woman’s cheeks as she watched Effy walk out the door. All she had ever wanted was to protect her, to do what could never be done with her parents. She had failed them. Their bodies had been torn apart in front of her eyes because she hadn’t been strong enough to protect them. Lennox couldn’t allow that to happen with the younger girl; there was too much goodness in her, and with the world as it was currently, every little ray of light had to be protected, Effy included. She had slipped up though, and the younger brunette was left almost eaten alive because Lennox had gotten too distracted.

In the days following, Lennox could feel herself pushing the younger girl away. If she pushed her away, maybe then Effy could find someone that would actually be able to look after her. She tried to tell herself how this was just another example of why Lennox was better off when she didn’t have anyone to worry about. She told herself that she had tricked herself into believing that she could open back up and actually depend on people and allow them to depend on her as well. People were always saying how it was a world where everyone was out for themselves; there was no room for allowing yourself to be vulnerable with someone else. And so that’s what she tried to convince herself was the case, but it didn’t work. She was too tightly wound around the unlikely friend that had stumbled into her life when fists were flying and Lennox had been left with a black eye and the shy voice of a bystander telling her to take deep breaths and that it was okay.

It seemed to Effy however that their friendship didn’t mean nearly as much to her as it did to Lennox. The small push back on Effy had left the younger girl running away and leaving the patrol in the dust. She had looked at Lennox with a look of confusion as if Lennox should have seen this coming. In response, Lennox had forced her expression to neutralize as Effy turned away from her, a numbness taking over her body. Maybe this was for the best. Lennox would only get her killed after all. Step away. Just let her walk away. And so she did.

“I have my… connections,” he shrugged, tossing the limp meat into the nearby shrubs. “This place is pretty sick, though. If I was a hobo, this would be my palace.”

“What, you got play-doh dealers?” She laughed, playing around with the boy around her age. She hadn’t seen anyone her age in a while, but then again she wasn’t looking. “If this isn’t your palace right now, what is?”

Effy smiled at the thought of all the good memories she had involving snow, watching as it seemed the girl was thinking about how lovely snow would be too. “There’s a possibility it could snow, you know.”

{{ * Anastasia sits out on the porch of the home she’s found, looking around to make sure that it’s clear. She’s found a rocking chair and holds Luke close to her chest while she rocks. “I swear, rain would be beautiful right now. Or snow.” Anastasia speaks, to no one in particular.

“I agree, though I would prefer snow.”

“Not bad,” he joked, stabbing the canned meat with a stick. “Tastes like play-doh.”

“How do you know what play-doh tastes like?”

“Lead the way, darling. It looks as though it might start snowing again and I’d really like a roof over my head before that happens.”

“Follow me.” Effy began to walk towards the area, making sure he was following her. “I love the snow, but that’s completely understandable.”

L I F E   B E F O R E   T H E   O U T B R E A K:

Effy had a pretty good life, she loved her parents and they loved her back, she did well in school, she had friends. Things have always been great for her, but she had always felt disappointed with her life and life in general.  All her life Effy had been the good girl, she followed the rules, she did what her parents asked of her, and she never did anything truly exciting. She hated that about herself, she wanted to live her life and do crazy shit with her peers, but she was constantly afraid of the consequences. She didn’t want her parents to be disappointed in her, she didn’t want to be in trouble at school, she cared too much for that. She lived her life in regret and fear, and it was her fault and no one else’s. Finally, the summer after her high school graduation and near her birthday, she snuck out with her friends. It was the first time she’s done anything big and crazy and she loved it. It was exhilarating, and she could feel the adrenaline coursing through her. They didn’t do much, it was just her friends smoking weed near the park while she sat on the swings, but it was enough for her. It was the first time she’s done anything crazy, and she didn’t get caught. Since that time that was all she did, she never participated in the drugs or alcohol but being out when she wasn’t supposed to made her feel crazy enough.

L I F E   D U R I N G   T H E   O U T B R E A K:

When the first part of the outbreak started she had been out with her friends, her parents were constantly afraid of her going out and catching whatever was going on. Anytime she wanted to go out then she had to find some way without being noticed. That was the biggest mistake she’s ever made, the virus was getting worse and worse but she was a teenager and she didn’t care. She thought it was nothing, so one night when she snuck out her parents found out and went searching for her, that same night the dead came back to life in Cheyenne and she was the cause of her parents deaths. She got away, she survived and has been fighting since.

L I F E   A F T E R   T H E   O U T B R E A K:

Effy feels intense grief and guilt for her parents death, but continues to fight her way through this apocalypse. She’s trying her hardest to survive on her own, and while the loneliness is killing her she’s trying her best to survive for hope that one day the world will be good again.

Faith after last night wasn’t too what she thought about anything, but as she was told it was all good to go, without another word out the door she went as she ran a hand through her hair, but the sound of footsteps not only caught her attention but made her slow her walking pace down a little so that whomever could catch up to her if they wanted to. ❝ Hi! ❞ She greets somewhat cheerily as she keeps her voice soft. ❝ You getting ready to leave too? ❞

Effy was glad to hear the storm had ended, but would miss the company of all the people in the hotel. It was the only time she was around people, and now she’d have to go back to being alone. She stepped out of the hotel and saw a blonde girl walking ahead of her, and when she saw her slow down a bit she took it as her chance to greet her. “Hey!” Effy was happy to see the girl was friendly and welcoming. “Yeah, gotta get back home.”

“Oh I am so glad to be out of that hotel. I would love to never talk about it again and go on like it never happened. You think that’s possible?”

“At some point, you might want me to. But hey, if you don’t tell me, I’ll just keep rambling on. And we’ll be talking until three am and it’ll be great. Oh, nice. You like it here? I don’t find it to be too horrible. It’s kind of small. But, you know, i’m just used to bigger cities.”
