Jazz is a one of a kind thing…because it’s a musician’s music. A jazz chart looks at you and says, “these here are the pitches I’m going to center around so just do what you think is right”. Jazz doesn’t ask if you know, Jazz asks only if you can play. It expects you to know what you want to do and patiently waits for you to make up your mind. Here, are the portraits of its giants, its pioneers, its craftsmen, artisans, impressionists, existentialists, polymaths, disciples, and its wisest men. Welcome to E Flat A Flat, a discussion of Jazz.
I've spent some time fishing around for some new Erroll Garner records and found some really great stuff! This tune I've had on repeat for a couple of days now so I thought I'd share with you good people. Here's "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man", from Play It Again, Erroll!
Been posting a lot of Cannonball Adderley lately but this is another good one. "Cobbweb" features the session's drummer, Jimmy Cobb taking two extended solos with a real swinging couple of choruses from Cannonball himself.
Stumbled across this gem and it really makes me miss Amy Winehouse, because I would have loved to work with a person with this kind of ear for jazz phrasing and chord progressions. Check out, "Moody's Mood For Love" from Frank
I've got a really exhaustive collection of Miles' work with Columbia records, pretty much every album, but very little of i've managed to make iTunes friendly, which is frustrating. Regardless here's another standard I've wanted up for some time, and a nice change of pace. Here's, "Dear Old Stockholm".
I've been trying to post a version of this standard for ages, and after carefully combing my iTunes library (a process still in the works lol), I came across this recording from Power To The People. Also seems appropriate to have something up from this album given the recent passing of the King holiday. Here's another Henderson original, "Isotope".
Found this track while writing a draft for another blog and I really like the accompaniment pianist Junior Mance lays down, and the interplay between him and Jimmy Cobb on drums during the horn solos. This number was written by bassist Sam Jones who worked with Cannonball through most of his career. Enjoy, "Spectacular"
Last Year I posted a recording of this song from the Poll Winners album, but I actually like this version better, particularly because Victor Feldman really locks into the feeling provided by Sam Jones and Lou Hayes. Here again is Azule Serape, enjoy your Sunday!
Happy Saturday all! Figured you wouldn't mind a little Oscar Peterson to groove along to, especially so if in pleasant company. Here's Oscar doing his thing on an old standard from Jerome Kern.
Here's a lesser known track from Clifford Brown's Memorial Album titled, "Carvin' The Rock". I think this album gets its name from the team at Blue Note who put this compilation together as a tribute to Brown. There are plenty of rare recordings of some great tunes, most of which were Brown's first as a bandleader.
I really like this number and the album as a whole. Interestingly enough the electric pianist, George Cables, is one of my professors at the New School. Enjoy Caribbean Fire Dance an original from Joe Henderson
Been checking out some new Cannonball Adderley stuff, and found this album titled "Just Friends". Now I think this cover is a re-release of a Paul Chambers album titled, "Go" which has the same personnel and track listing but I guess someone wanted to give Cannonball credit. Regardless here's, "Ease It".
And so Monday returns...once again...the start of yet another work or school week. Not that one shouldn't appreciate it, but still, Monday lol. To get myself inspired and moving, I'm starting my day off with a classic standard from trumpeter Lee Morgan titled, "The Sidewinder". Can't go wrong with this one. Enjoy!
Afternoon and Happy Sunday to you all. I was listening to this tune earlier yesterday and I'm thinking of transcribing Clifford's solo over these changes. I really dig the way Gertrude's Bounce moves from a sort of theatrical intro into a seriously swinging hard bop feel. Must've been nice having the immortal Max Roach on drums for all those years no? Enjoy "Gertrude's Bounce" from At Basin Street
Afternoon good people! Starting things off today with a selection from Chick Corea who I believe is making his first appearance on the blog. This tune is called, "Armando's Rhumba", featuring Chick on piano, and a very killin solo from Gary Burton on vibes.
A return at long last! Better late than never as they say lol. I've been moving/adjusting to being a student again and this week I've been really sick so I've had a week off from classes to get my digital life back in order so to speak lol. Anyways, figured there's no better place to start again than back where it all began, so here's a little Benny Goodman, swingin over a tune titled, "Avalon".
Morning all! Going to start off this Saturday with another selection from Cannonball & Coltrane titled, "Wabash". This track I really enjoy because you really get to hear the pair of styles at a more accessible tempo than "Limehouse Blues" or "Grand Central" which are flying by at breakneck speeds.
