was thinking about touch-starved/touch-averse tlok characters and somehow it turned into a competition between lin and kuvira. it's ms. "cannot process any tender touch from anyone, including her family, because she's wanted and not had it for so long that it's become overwhelming to her" and ms. "has had everyone in her life, including her biological family, alarmed and unsettled by her in childhood, resulting in her only ever tolerating touch in a professional, emotionally neutral setting" and their showdown. no one else comes close.

how does Bending Genetics work as it pertains to the avatar in ATLA? the only avatar who we know had children are Roku and Aang, and their stuff is as follows:

-although i dont remember how many children Roku had, we know at least 1 was a firebender, since that child went on to continue a "powerful benders lineage" which eventually culminated in Zuko and Azula

-Aang had 3 with Katara, a waterbender. Of those children, one Airbended, one Waterbended, and one had no bending at all.

we know a few things about bending genetics. For one, in airbender to airbender relationships, the child is always an airbender. This is not always true of other benders, but we know it to be the case because of how air nomad society functioned prior to the 100 years war. After the hundred years war, air acolytes, non-benders who desire study of air nomads and their culture, begin to habitate the air temples, until the events of LoK.

We also know that in airbender to non-airbender relationships, the child is not guaranteed airbending, since Kya LoK and Bumi LoK are without it.

my question lies in this: from a bending genetics perspective, how is the avatar viewed? Aang is, to our knowledge, the only avatar to have children with someone outside his nation. Could he have, hypothetically, created a firebending child from his genetics alone? we know that only one parent must have a style of bending for it to potentially move to their offspring, so its not out of the question. Alternatively, since the avatar having all 4 styles of bending is the result of the spirit Raava, does genetics only account for what they would have been capable of without Raava's influence?

I could be getting my facts wrong somewhere in here if I am feel free to correct me in the notes

From what details we do have:

Avatars are born with their native element based on the Avatar Cycle (Fire->Air->Water->Earth). An avatar child born of two parents of diff elements bending-wise, will be whatever element coincides with the cycle.

There is a level of determinism, from what we have seen, as babies are (from what we have seen) generally not born to parents of considerable structural authority, see Sozin and Roku being born on the same day (Korra plays with this as her father is the son of a chief, but exiled, then is later granted chiefdom of the SWT).

In general, any baby can be a nonbender (however air nomads will canonically have airbending children, it is speculated in-universe to because of their spiritual aptitude). If a baby is a bender, their element is dictated by parental genetic element, see: Kya, Tenzin, Mako, Bolin, Kyoshi.

It's unlikely for Aang to have a firebending child unless he has firebending heritage somewhere in his family tree. But we know it's based on family tree (not strictly parents) as Katara's parents were nonbenders who gave birth to a waterbending child.

Kyoshi is an interesting twist, as her mother was an airbender, but Kyoshi is a native earthbender (re: the Avatar Cycle). Some speculate this is because her mother was losing her airbending due to her guilt, but honestly, we can't know for certain, as the Roku novels demonstrate an airbender who doesn't follow air nomad principles.

We also know there's some level of organic determinism regarding benders, as there's no evidence of firebenders of the Fire Nation suddenly having an earthbending baby. Parentage and family tree acts as a determinant. We also know the world will organize to produce benders of the four elements ala Harmonic Convergence. But non-benders appear to always remain the global majority.

Something I noticed is that on the iceberg, Rangi drags Kyoshi into the tent instead of lifting her up and carrying her in, which would be the more comfortable way to do it.

But later in the fire nation she is capable of throwing a pretty big table off a balcony with only mild strain. A table that could have possibly killed someone if it landed on them mind you.

This COULD mean nothing. But that's boring and I like to think that Rangi noticed how heavy Kyoshi actually is and went like "I should probably be able to lift her in case of emergency (to show off)" and aggressively trained her strength.

They're in the show for all of 2 seconds but I still think one can do an analysis on how Bumi and Kya are great air nomads in principle/practice, juxtaposed by Tenzin. Idk it's doable. I don't think Tenzin lacks the qualities of an air nomad, as I don't think it's as black or white as it's made out to be, but. I think it would be interesting nontheless

It looks like the Kyoshi warrior comic is going to show how a lot of civilians throughout the Earth Kingdom feel like the Kyoshi warriors have failed to live up to their duties and to the legend of their namesake in protecting and defending and helping them during this war

And I am so here for the kind of inner turmoil that will cause them to feel, because while the Kyoshi warriors have been trying, it's not unfair for the victims of the war to feel that way with how bad things have gotten. Plus it's a parallel to attitudes and responsibilities that Kyoshi herself had to deal with.

It's gonna be good.
