Literally nothing will ever be as satisfying as the 4 minute long fight sequence in Kingsman: The Secret Service, in which Colin Firth mercilessly wastes an entire Westboro Basptist Church like congregation as the guitar solo from Lynard Skynard’s 1973 anthem Freebird plays in the background.

I present the headcannon: shooting Mr. Pickle was not actually the traumatic event that triggered Harry’s memories. We see the flashback of the dog test, but half of the flashback is spent in Harry’s bathroom where the butterflies are. Meanwhile Eggsy is there in the present, holding the gun and threatening to shoot the puppy.

Idea: it was the fight with Eggsy that upset him so much, and that memory, tied as it was with the dog, snapped him back into himself.

Two points that further support this:

1) The flashback of Harry shooting Mr Pickle (as well as his “I would never hurt Mr Pickle”) implies that Harry had a far better idea of the tests parameters than Eggsy did during his test. Furthermore, he appears more pleased with himself than particularly traumatized. 

2) Harry goes right back into that fight with Eggsy. Right back into the words that passed between, albeit more forceful and loud. Right back into that moment in which he and Eggsy had a falling out. 

Conclusion: It would absolutely make more sense for it to be the fight with Eggsy that snapped him back rather than the actually act of having to shoot his dog.
