Maverick’s idea to wipe out everyone’s memory and make Kotetsu the public enemy number one is so evil and genius.
We’ve seen Barnaby call Kotetsu by his name, during episodes 14-19 it’s just *hearteyes* Kotetsu-san everytime they talk.
And then! Maverick is like “Oh you care about him? And he’s dumb enough to care about you too? I’m going to make you hate him.”
Like when you hear Barnaby say “Kaburagi T. Kotetsu I won’t forgive you”, and you’ve heard that tone of voice before, you know what Barnaby is capable of doing when he wants to take his revenge (literally Kill, and he would’ve killed Jake if Kotetsu wasn’t there looking at him). The fcking……. poetic cinema of Wild Tiger’s real identity being secret enough so the whole spiel goes through.
The public doesn’t know who Kotetsu is. That’s the key thing in defeating Jake, but Kotetsu’s fight with Jake when he tells his name is not aired to the masses (for being too violent), only people who already know Kotetsu’s identity watch that.
There’s a handful of people knowing who he really is, and the plan can work just because there’s like 10 of them and Maverick can get to all the relevant ones and alter their memories.
Of course he didn’t account for Ben and Kaede and Kotetsu’s family, but this doesn’t matter, he believes that Kotetsu’s is gonna be caught soon enough so whatever who cares about three people suffering.
And how ironically the evil scenario of Kotetsu being just a guy and nobody knowing who Wild Tiger really is, is what Kotetsu would want, in an ideal world. Superhero identity and real person are separate and could not be more different.
Idk, just. Seeing how easily it is to turn his friends against him. But also Mavericks powers not being all powerful with a single contradiction being able to just put a wrench in the plan. Yes he has the media and the evil organization at his hand. Yes he trusts that the manufactured persona of Barnaby “revenge boy out for revenge” will do everything. It was effective before why wouldn’t it work now? Let’s just alter his memories slightly, okay yeah he’s in love with his partner let’s just erase the fact of who it really is, this is not that relevant and there’s evidence of them hanging out so he can’t truly get rid of who Wild Tiger is to Barnaby and other heroes. But he can do the emotional manipulation where the name previously said with love and affection is said with hatered.
Truly evil plan imo, and it would have worked, if it weren’t for love and friendship, and the fact that Kotetsu loves Barnaby as well, to the point where he gives him a nickname and an attempt at his own identity outside “Barnaby Revenge Boi Brooks Jr”. And Maverick even knows what that is (Kotetsu refers to him as “Bunny” when they’re in his office drinking coffee), but finds it not relevant enough to take it into account.
This anime really has everything and I love it so much.
