I find it incredibly messed up that the reason Burt Goodman got severed was so that his husband could have a "pure" version of him who hadn't sinned and could therefore go to heaven with him. He and Cecil acknowledge that innies are their own people with their own "souls", but still feel a sense of ownership over Burt's innie, creating him to serve their purpose.
Burt G came into the world already belonging to someone he had never met.
I think the Irving situation kind of made them realise this, because Burt's husband did admit that he believed innies should be able to experience love, but I think it's among the more fucked up reasons to get severed in the first place.
You can't create a person with a purpose and expect them to fill it, because their sentience will lead to them making their own decisions. Of course Burt G would fall in love with someone else -- it serves them right, honestly. Their plan involved Burt not having his own life, only living as preparation for his existence in heaven.
A controversial rpf fantasy:
disclaimer: I never want real actors to read rpf or fanfiction about themselves. I think crazies who show actors any part of fandom should be taken out back and shot. this is just for the girlies who also share my dbh mental illness.
Okay so imagine if u will:
Megan and Jenn.
Alone together in Chicago.
Just tryna flesh out their characters and figuring out the right dynamics and back and forths.
The director’s note is it’s still a bit too forced. Megan’s too nice and Jenn’s too jokey.
After too many rehearsals of pretend clenched fists and overdone fake laughter, they decide to privately get together in their hotel room late one night and hammer things out until they get the characters’ relationships real and correct.
It’s all the same so Jenn tries to get meaner and meaner but it just makes Megan flush and fawn even harder, until Jenn finally breathes out hard through her nose and is like, “what is the deal with you? why won’t you verbally spar with me?”
And Megan just flusters and avoids and Jenn gets more in her space trying to get a real answer from her until they’re practically nose to nose and Jenn’s glaring at her eyes but Megan’s are on her mouth and then—
Oops.
They’re makin those hotel sheets keep nasty new secrets.
The next rehearsal is a million miles different. The barbs are hitting, the glaring so hot it’s practically steaming, the comments so sharp they could cut glass.
The director can only laugh and applaud and be entranced.
At the end, they’re asked what changed.
The eye contact. The secret smirking.
“We just needed to find the right tension.”

like, the most compelling ships for me always stem out of one thing: the characters have a profound, ongoing effect on each other’s senses of selves. when they are apart, the characters’ actions are still affected by each other. the way they approach the world changes because of the other.
which is this deeply Austenian view of ideal romantic relationships as mechanisms by which we come to know ourselves better and become better versions of ourselves. good romance, for me, is always tied in with a sense of self-actualization, and the way in which a beloved partner allows a person to know themselves better.
thinking about madhel, helen saying it to madeline in college in awe and disbelief but as they grow up she starts saying it with envy then finally bitterness
basically the best thing a story can have is a woman who is doomed. massive points if she destroys the people around her in response.
