Looking back I feel I was lucky to be part of a group that was very much engaged and eager to produce something good and meaningful out of what seemed to be a simple concept such as SameTime/ManyPlaces. In terms of the skills I have acquired, I would say the production experience by itself was...

Assignment #4
Common Subject: My Mornings
30' Photo-montage
Assignment # 3
Framing Technique: Rule of Thirds
Lighting Technique: Available lighting.
For this interview I decided to frame my questions with the introduction "what if the world ends in December 2012" (according to the Mayan calendar), because I wanted my friend to look deep into his own memories and describe that one unique experience that had truly made a mark in his life. An interesting comment he told me off camera was that it was hard for him to imaging the world could actually end in 10 months, and if that were a real fact, he probably wouldn't be wasting not even 4 minutes with me in an interview, time would become the most valuable thing in life. On the other hand, it was also interesting to find out that the one positive memory he thought it would matter the most in his 23 years of life was actually a social/political event he was able to witness at the age of 19.
I filmed this interview in a high-ceiling hallway stairs, there were 2 overhead incandescent lamps, high enough not to create too much glare bouncing on his forehead. I thought the brick walls would give us warm background to help enhance the mood of the interview and try to make it more meaningful. I used a digital SLR camera (T3i) with an 18-55mm lens set it at 1920x1080 30fps.
Assignment #2 - More samples of interesting use of different visual tools.
Assignment #2/2 - Habitual/Defamiliarization by ehurtado
Through a "Defamiliarization" technique the combination of this ad title and picture; "in an absolut world the man is the one who gets pregnant while the woman enjoys a glass of vodka martini", instantly force us to break away from the stereotypical thinking and makes us create a new vision, a new order which generates different and unexpected ideas. From my own perspective, beyond the breaking of normal boundaries and effectively enhance an attitude towards the brand, this visual tool has also the ability to make me reexamine a natural fact we take for granted and try to understand thoughts and feelings of women in those life scenarios.
Assignment #2/1 - Example 1 Literal vs Rhetorical by ehurtado
I found this 2 ads that I believe work as good samples of Literal vs Rhetorical content. The first one on the left (1970s style) shows a picture 3 young guys and a girl wearing swimming suits under a sunny summer day according to the wording of the advertisement. The high angle framing shows them simply standing on what seems to be a boat platform, which I think it was probably intentional to make them look like a crowd of high-class people. The picture layout together with the yellow-orange background, the semicircle shape of a sun on top and the title "Summers" are meant to form a literal reflection of reality. On the other hand (literally), the ad on the right side, simply shows an open hand placed firmly a wet silver surface, however the singularity of having webbed fingers which subconsciously suggests this person spends so much time in the water he's actually developed webbed hands, works as a symbolic form clever enough to instantly link the Speedo brand to the swimming action, but it also persuades me to think it is perhaps the best brand to wear if should take swimming seriously.
