Miscria, Dragon of Mischief.
I had a lot of fun with this commission and a client who wanted me to unleash whatever creative elements I wanted into the piece, which is a lot of power that I clearly ended up channeling into an abundance of details.
I will admit I was given a lot of fantastic material to work with for this artwork of a tabletop roleplay character named Miscria. I was told that Miscria, in her human form, bears similarities to a medieval succubus. I was given details of her look and most of the details regarding her outfit, along with some sample reference pictures, which you see reflected in her appearance. She is a punk rock princess who has “the kind of smile that makes you think she knows something that's going to get everyone in a lot of trouble. She's Mischief in the classic sense - Chaotic Good to the extreme.”
“[She is] essentially, a punk-rock, bat- winged faerie dragon - with powers of illusion and magic. A two-fisted Johnny Rotten aesthetic if he ate a handful of pixies.”
I also read some of the creator’s short stories about her, which inspired a lot of the elements of her background to fit with the lore of the character. The peanut butter jars, coffee cups, and glitter jars allude to her open mic poetry sessions at a Seattle coffee shop, where she “somehow made a metaphor about peanut butter work, and called for responding to violence with ‘glitter herpes’.” The Black Cauldron elements refer to another of her stories where she dazzled the crowd at a Midsummer Night’s Faire with illusionary magic and her telling of the Black Cauldron tale. The side panels in the artwork blend that and her anti-authority character with the image of a sword breaking chains (and other chains cracking or breaking, including one with a gold lock) and then Hen Wen and the Cauldron on the other side. The music notes entwined with her fire magic are the opening lines of "Hall of the Mountain King" (my own addition to fit the artwork themes) though if reading top to bottom it is being played in reverse. Allusions to her singing, of course!
I did my best to research punk aesthetics for this piece and tie in a lot of things like chains, studded leather, and safety pins into design elements.
The art is mixed media. It was mainly completed in color pencil, with ink on the background black of the side panels. In addition to the pencils, some silver acrylic used on the jewelry metalics, silver watercolor on the chain mail border, glitter on the glitter jars and black glitter center silhouette, and silver leaf and silver paint on the circle spotlight behind Miscria. It was a rare case (for me these days) of mailing physical artwork to the client as well! I know the finished artwork even went to a framer to get a custom frame made, which feels particularly special!

Striving For Our Best Selves
Sometimes unlikely art projects have a way to meet the moment.
Last month, I worked on a piece for my Birthday Bird series for my Patreon that featured the birthday bird of June: the dove. This common symbol of peace felt especially meaningful paired with the month's flower of honeysuckle. Honeysuckle has several meanings, including hope, togetherness, and resilience against negativity. Things that really match with the moment for myself, family, friends, and people I care about. Hybrid Animal Artober Day 31: Dracula Batrot
A hybrid animal based on Episode 116 of the Just the Zoo of Us Podcast, which features the Painted Bat and the Dracula Parrot.
It was pure coincidence that, this year, my Halloween post fell right on a spooky themed episode being featured, but I will admit that I was giddily happy about it.
I also realize this animal may not be deemed the spookiest out of my hybrid critters this year. You can give me a comment about which one you think that was!
These festively colored critters may have all the colors of a Halloween bat with red Dracula touches, but they are certainly not the storytale bat to inspire fear. Instead, these rather small and shy critters feast on insects and figs. They are also more solitary than some species of bats, not forming large colonies, and only forming small groups that number no more than half a dozen.
Hybrid Animal Artober Day 30: Aardvolly
A hybrid animal based on Episode 114 of the Just the Zoo of Us Podcast, which features the Amazon Molly and the Aardvark.
The Aardvolly is a rare specimen of a creature that has been able to thrive as an asexually reproducing species that creates clones of the mother with diploid eggs. The heartiness of this little creature has been a key factor to their survival, along with their diet ranging from ants and insects to algaes and other plant matter.
Hybrid Animal Artober Day 29: Echizard
A hybrid animal based on Episode 112 of the Just the Zoo of Us Podcast, which features the Mexican Mole Lizard and the Echidna.
These long critters mainly dwell underground and prefer a diet of ants, though they will opportunistically feed on other insects when they are unable to find their preferred diet. They do come above ground sometimes and are also excellent swimmers. When threatened, they can drop their tail, leaving a decoy behind while they escape. Unfortunately, they cannot regenerate their lost tail, which results in many adults in the wild being shorter than the full length because of lost tail length.

A hybrid animal based on Episode 109 of the Just the Zoo of Us Podcast, which features the Philippine Eagle and the Humpback Whale.
This majestic creature is known for its deep melodic songs. While it is a marine species, it has a love of breeching from the water, even using its wings to glide over the water or through currents of the ocean. They even enjoy slapping waves and the surface with their tail and fins, with most of these behaviors attributed to play and social interactions.

A hybrid animal based on Episodes 107 & 110 of the Just the Zoo of Us Podcast, which feature the Thresher Shark and the Backswimmer.
These little guys use their long tails to hunt, whipping it among a gathering of their prey to stun or kill the tiny insects, larva, or tadpoles that may be in the pond or water where they are hunting.
Hybrid Animal Artober Day 26: Hoatzin Skipper
A hybrid animal based on Episode 106 of the Just the Zoo of Us Podcast, which features the Mudskipper and the Hoatzin.
These critters love going between land, trees, and water. Besides their fins and wings, they also having claws on their wings. The claws are most notable on their young, who can use them to aid in climbing and maneuvering before they grow into their flight skills. Despite their striking looks, they are not a popular creature due to their pungent odor that is described as ‘fishy manure’.

A hybrid animal based on Episodes 105 & 108 of the Just the Zoo of Us Podcast, which feature the Fossa and the Great Horned Owl.
This fierce carnivore has a reputation of being an impressive hunter. Its strong jaws, athletics and dexterity give it the ability to go after pretty large prey for its size. They can be active at night or day, and their nocturnal vision and excellent hearing also aid in their hunting prowess.
Hybrid Animal Artober Day 24: Tap-Tick
A hybrid animal based on Episode 103 of the Just the Zoo of Us Podcast, which features the Malayan Tapir and the Lone Star Tick.
Unlike the tick, the tap-tick is not a pest for humans. Plants might not feel the same way, as this herbivore creature makes use of its proboscis to reach the tender shoots and morsels of the foliage around it. It’s markings are quite distinct, with a pale near-white spot high on the darker upper portion of its dorsal shield.

A hybrid animal based on Episodes 101 & 140 of the Just the Zoo of Us Podcast, which feature the Mantis Shrimp (Hemisquilla ensigera californiensis) and the Pangolin.
This fascinating critter has scales of iridescent, pearly purple-blue. Besides the protection of its armor, it has club-like appendages that can strike with great force. They live in burrows and hollows, and are nocturnal creatures.
