Last Act of Kindness

He'd had minor out-patient surgery a few days before. Minor surgery that resulted in major post-op pain.

He hobbled around the house, clutching at countertops whenever a flash of stabbing pain shot through him.

He moaned and groaned loudly from the bathroom.

He said he felt like shit. He said he'd never experienced anything like this before. He said he was exhausted.

He took a 2 hour nap.

When he woke up she brought him a mug of tea, made just the way he likes. She even used the "good honey" made from her cousin's beehives.

A short while later he came downstairs, no longer in his pajamas but fully dressed now. He put on his coat.

He said he was going to a neighbor's New Year's Eve party. She hadn't been invited.

But his girlfriend was.

She presumed that at midnight he kissed his future life.

A mile away, alone, she downed a glass of Veuve Clicqout and air-kissed her past goodbye.

Then she threw out all tea in the house and went to bed.
