I didn’t even think about discussing post modernism as a “post class” kind of topic. When I think about anything that is past the romantic period, I think of breaking the rules and creating an atmospheric approach to literature.  My musical education has actually helped me through this class, in Sophomore Music Theory 2 we have been discussing post modern music. The two art forms go hand-and-hand, surprisingly, even though they are totally opposite mediums. The literary side craves the need for the decomposition of structure and boundries, and as well as the Post Modern Music of this world.

I love that you made a T. Swizzle reference. She is like my favorite person on the face of the planet. Anyways I thought it was kind of inappropriate that he let him have the gold flakes considering what he was using them for. I agree with you about the innocence theme. The child throughout the entirety of the chapter represents the ignorance that innocence provides you with. What I am curious about is why Egan wants to include innocence in her satirical book about how awful the technological generation is. I personally did not like this book. Just throwing that out there.

So, if you ever wondered about “the end” or an “apocalypse” or what not. Here’s some hypothetical suggestions, actually based on scientific research. This is a “what-if” and its kind of freaky.

I read about this! It was driving me crazy that the author didn’t mention anything in the book about the exact cause of the apocalypse. I ruled out any sort of disease related apocalypse, but I was curious as to what kind of natural disaster could cause this to happen. I saw the volcano research also. Which is really freaky, like you said, because it seems like an event that is very plausible and could happen at any moment. I can’t imagine the sun being blocked out for ten years, but it is nice to think about how the boy could possibly see improvement in his life in less than a decade! Or maybe it’s just blind hope telling me that.

The boy and father find their cart, but when they do they can not take it through the snow. This is symbolic because it is like no matter how hard they try in this post-apocalyptic world, they are always going to be one step behind, this is also where hope is lost. The snow makes it very difficult...

I feel like the snow does symbolize the obstacles, that's a good point. I feel like it is a hopeful book in a sense though. It has a very lyrical sense about it, and the boy is almost proof that there is hope for the rebuilding of a new world. Post apocalyptic worlds seem close to unbelievable, but I think sometimes these books show you no matter how hard life gets, all you can do is keep going, it’s all going to end the same way. No matter what obstacle is in your path you have to overcome it or lay down and give up.

In this chapter Ted Hollander is traveling to Naples to look for his niece but he spends more time looking at art then looking for Sasha. He seems to shut everyone out of his life to focus on what is important to him. When he finally does find her and meet up with her, he sees her suicide scars...

I found Ted to be a very weird character. I thought it was interesting that the author chose to elaborate on him. I think that she used him as an example of the kind of person who appreciates art. Also, it bothered me that he didn't really keep up with what eh was supposed to be doing, I mean he is getting paid to find a girl who might be in trouble(and she is), but he spent his time wandering around Naples enjoying the view. I think she took the wallet from him because she wanted to steal something from someone she knows so intimately.

The End:(

The Road is by far my favorite book we have read all semester. which is weird considering that it is the most bleak and depressing. The diction and scenery were similar, but at the same time it was more like a weird harmony they had going on. The diction painted how bleak the scene was, but at the same time it was very lyrical in nature. Also, I just wanted to let everyone know I really enjoyed this class! Especially my group members: Kk (however you spell your name I’m sorry lol), Nicole and Risdon. I have really enjoyed analyzing the literature with you guys! I will miss you! Thanks Ms Clark for being a fantastic teacher! I have a great semester thanks everyone!

Analysis of the characters in “The Road”

The Father was a picture of a man who would love his son and take care of him no matter what the cost. It was amazing all the pain and suffering he endured, but to still have the hope to “carry the fire” on towards the future. The son was a needy character, but at the same time, what else was he supposed to be? A picture of a young boy being completely efficient in a post apocalyptic world isn’t realistic. The boy’s character is the most attainable in the novel, the Father and the other characters aren’t something that we all can understand. Ely was an interesting character to think about. I have done some research on why he is the only named character in the book, but I haven’t really found any answers. He represents the old world and the faith that has been lost in God.

I do not know if I am more stoked that I had completed “The Road” on time or if I am disappointed that the novel is actually completed. Out of the four novels we read, this was hands down my favorite. It was simple on the subject, and I actually enjoyed the style of writing the author used; was...

It was my favorite too. I loved how poet McCarthy's diction was. The storyline was continuos and never stopped, allowing you to be invested in the novel during the entire storyline. I think the subject was simple, but at the same time had a lot of complicated overtones that could be interpreted in many different ways. Such as the idea that the novel is a Christian allegory, it takes a lot of analysis to figure out where exactly he wanted the novel to go. Because the novel could also be taken as just a novel that defines what love is. Humanity was the most important subject he touched on, which in itself is a difficult subject to define.

Eric Satie composed this three piece work to try and muddle the rules of western music. I am using one of the pieces on my project but I really wanted to sure them with my fellow classmates, I feel like it is easy to link up wight The Road. The lack of tonicizaiton makes it similar to the novel. I felt like post modern music would fit the book, because it is very lost and confused sounding music, much like the novel's characters, but I felt like the poetic language Mccarthy uses deserved more credit, and these pieces really stuck out to me.

Ok. I hate this book. The ending made the whole book worthless. All of the characters I was emotionally invested in don’t matter they were just pawns in the author’s satirical approach to the technological generation. I understand why she felt the need to write this book, but I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH HOW SHE ENDED IT. Maybe it was part of her satirical take, but I think she could have done better. It just made it a completely worthless piece of literature. Ok I wouldn’t take it that far, I am just trying to get my point across. That’s what happens when you try to hard to get your point across. You look stupid. Like she did. Rant over.

AVFTG Part 1

The first half of the book is great I really love it. Unlike everyone else, I am enjoying the point of view switching from character to character. I feel like it gives you another approach to developing the character's persona and background story. It is an overall easy read it seems, she uses very readable diction, and the pieces of the puzzle she gives you are easy to fit together. The characters are overall very likable, and sort of relatable. I don’t really see her purpose in writing the novel but I am sure I will get to that. At least I hope.

Wish I could help.

So far I'm really enjoying this book. Although I'm not sure what exactly the plot is yet. The only thing that has really bothered me is the chapter with Stephanie and benne. Oh and the chapter where they are in Africa, and especially the chapter that Doll takes Kitty to the general. So pretty much half the book so far now that I look at it. I think what bothers me the most is seeing the obvious relationship flaws between these characters, and not being able to do anything to help them. I feel like something is pulling me and can't ignore it. So many things have gone wrong and it would have been easy for them to go right. The novel displays how choices affect everyone's timeline. Not just your own.

The Things They Carried

I was re-reading this selection this weekend and realized I never really posted about it! The story telling Tim O’Brien presents in his novel is really hard to top. I love how it feels like he is sitting there talking to you the entire time, the way he pauses to interject some other story or facts that may or may not be related to the story really gives the novel a sort of “homey” feel. But at the same time he is talking about people being blown up and young men shooting baby buffalos to death kind of took away from tho homey feel. I honestly felt like it was an overall good read and I am glad we had it in the class because I would have never know about it other wise! The importance of Story Telling is a major theme in the novel. O'Brien feels that Story telling is the only way we have to keep memories of the past, and those who have passed on alive.

As a human being, you never truly understand the emotions that you experience. No matter how many years you spend on the earth there will always be a feeling you can’t explain or handle. “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is a literary work with many important themes. The characters are all grieving in their own ways over the loss of one man, who they all loved.  The plot supports the theme by taking the main and supporting characters on a journey, even though it seems separate they are all in it together because of their connection to each other.
