At the end of the last keynote at Hadoop Summit 2016, Herb Cunitz (President of Hortonworks) announced that as part of the continuing effort to make a bigger tent, next year’s conference will be called Dataworks Summit. First question, will we still get the fun but mildly scary 3D elephant render?

Nobody is surprised when IBM renames it’s conferences every year–Hortonworks is not, however, IBM.

President Obama can take the fairness mantra all the way to the bank and a second term. He can make the same argument up and down the line. Is it fair that children who live in school districts with a poor tax base because the residents of the district are poor should receive an inferior education? (Notice that this is not an argument against school districts made up of wealthy people; it is an argument against allowing wealth to skew the educational opportunities that should be fairly available to everyone.) Is it fair that Internet pirates in China can appropriate without paying for it the intellectual property of Americans who rely for their income on ideas they have copyrighted? Is it fair that those who fail to purchase health insurance take advantage of hospital emergency rooms at the expense of those who do the responsible thing? Is it fair that the voices of some citizens should be incredibly amplified because they have the money to buy a megaphone larger than the National Broadcasting Company? Is it fair that insurance companies that take premiums from us in return for taking risk make every effort possible to insulate themselves from risk, by refusing, as they long have, to cover pre-existing conditions?

What Makes Free Will Free?

My Response to a NYTimes article about Free Will by Gary Gutting in The Stone:

So the key here is the definition of the word "Free". In scientific terms, free means unimpeded by other like objects (definition by example: when considering the mechanics of a situation we look at the "free body" by taking the object of interest out of context and replacing the other objects with which it interacts with a mathematical construction). So if we consider free will in this sense we are left with the conclusion that when you take the object of interest (the entire human) out of it context, the decision is made freely by the object of interest without predictable outside influence. The causality that appears in this study is an "internal force". Put another way, this study takes a clump of brain matter as the "free body" and replaces all the other stuff going on inside and outside a human that interacts with that clump of brain with a mathematical construct. Thus it is over interpretation to assume that Free Will can be debunked by this style of experiment. As someone who understands that decisions and thoughts are nothing but electrochemical signals bolting about the viscous mass in my skull, I contend that predictability on the basis of the measurement of internal activity and outside causality are not equivalent. I agree that it is theoretically possible that, using state-of-the-art instrumentation, one can predict what someone is thinking or deciding; in the same way that with the right instruments I can predict the output of an electrical circuit.  To debunk Free Will one must prove not that decisions can be predicted; but that there is some causal outside force influencing our decisions (this means predicting the decision without measuring brain activity).
