Big night for women's MMA! #ufc184 #firsttimes #SOEXCITED
I’ve never had any trouble creating complex and passionate inner worlds for men.
Miranda July perfectly captures the discrepancies between love at a distance and love for real in this quirky little nonfiction story about following through on a crush. I love it. I think a part of us know, deep down, that what we admire in someone else, romantically-speaking, can be crushed at any given moment. We hold out hope, but in the end, something terrifying lies underneath: the reality of individuality, singular desire. We’ll never truly know someone else. (via britticisms)
The reality is that people don’t get dissuaded from living with passion or full of purpose in one day. It takes many little sidetracks and tiny diversions to shift the course of a life. These come in and take over when priorities aren’t solidly established, and slowly, our hearts die for lack of joy. This adventurous quest called life starts to feel like a complex labyrinth of a dark fable, instead of a joyful hedge we play in.

At my old day job at Groupon, I spoke on a panel about freelancing while still working the corporate gig. I said a lot of bullshit about schedules and balance and organization, but the truth of the matter was that I made a deliberate choice. I knew from the first day of that job that I did not want to be there and I never would.
It’s not that it was a bad place (even though it was, but that took years to actually develop). No, it was because I knew that I was no longer in a place where I would feel immense pleasure daily.
Before that gig, I worked in a museum where I spent my lunch breaks down in the galleries. But I also spent a year not really writing, at least not of substance. My previous environment was a little push away (a glorious push) from my goals. But I knew this new place would not offer the same rewards of distraction. No, it could potentially destroy me, make me angry, resentful. And it did in the end, at least a little bit. But I as able to alleviate that, to change my mind, to not let one thing be every thing.

Some wise words on freelancing and side jobs
#tbt Daily days before we became photos on the wall. Reporting everyday, breaking news, the 5am nights, the sleepovers, weird smells, living off pita, hummus and coffee.
With the families of indigenous women who are missing or have been murdered and their communities. Today at the Toronto Strawberry Ceremony a reporter asked the elder leading the ceremony if she was "impacted." Her response: We're all impacted by systemic gender-based violence. #MMIW

The interview that didn't make it on air
Shahid Mahmood is a Toronto journalist who recently wrote about the Ottawa shootings. I spoke to him for a radio report for Free Speech Radio News but due to sound quality, our interview never made it on air.
Here are some excerpts from our interview transcript:
It was sort of an assault on a Canadian way of life, even on a Canadian way of doing politics. Our Parliament Hill is set up in a very different way than say the White House in terms of security and accessibility so it is a sad day for everyone in regards to that.
On the same day as the shooting Malala, the child educator from Pakistan who was shot in the head by the Taliban was supposed to recieve an honorary Canadian citizenship. And Harper was also supposed to donate I believe around $100 million to global education initiatives for children. And because of the shooting he decided not to go forth with the ceremony and also unveiling this chunk of money. And my suggestion is that this was an opportunity for him to actually take a stance head on this issue head first. 2:14 ... 3:03 Really education is the only way to resolve this and Harper should have used this opportunity to make a really impactful statement to Canadians and to the rest of the world.
Canada has instead of you know perhaps engaging other countries ... addressing it in a more Canadian way which is helping them resolve social disparity, educational lapses and gaps, instead has chose to fight. Now that may or may not be the right way to go about doing things but what it does do is it then makes you a participant in a physical fight. 6:25 8:08 It's a slippery slope. You obviously don't want to head down the path of what it was during the Macarthy years in the U.S. Our post 9/11 word has seen enhanced security. It's seen rights that seemed, prior to 9/11, ingrained and the Charter of Freedoms being eroded. Everything from no fly lists to travelling has become an issue for many people. So I think whatever steps are taken by security agents, they need to understand that mistakes will be made and they need to allow for a transparent means for innocent people to rectify situations that they have been wrongfully put in.
