October 9th (today) is a day in Korea that commemorates the invention of our Korean alphabet, called Hangeul (한글).

One of Korea's king during the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejong the Great was the one who invented our alphabet.

Before this invention, the Korean language had been adapted from that of the Chinese, many of our language roots were made from the Chinese characters.

King Sejong however set out to make our Korea's own alphabet known as "Hangeul", without the influence of the Chinese language. Our very own.

Today is the day that celebrates this Korea's unique own language, Hangeul.

Hangeul is that it is the most scientifically beautiful language there is. Long time ago, Discovery magazine also dubbed Hangeul as the world's most rational alphabet.

King Sejong invented the Hangeul alphabet with his desire that everyone can access and learn even with no formal background and opportunity.

It took time for Hangeul to be widely spread in Korea, but in the earlier stages, it was very much used by a lot of Joseon Dynasty Korea's women.

The upper class in Korea's Joseon Dynasty at first disregarded Hangeul but this alphabet grew to be widely used by our nation through trials and passing of time.

Today is the day that falls on the lunar calendar that is Korea's holiday.

Called Chuseok (추석), this day is commonly described to abroad as Korea's thanksgiving.

In history, Korea was a agrarian society; people harvested (just like ancient Egypt) and prayed to get a full harvest of foods and goods.

This agrarian tradition denoted a Chuseok holiday for people to meet with family and friends and give thanks, to pray for an everlasting good harvest.

Chuseok is a very big family holiday in Korea so much that the traffic gets congested as citizens take a drive to local regions away from metropolitan city of Seoul to visit any loved ones.

Most businesses also close on this holiday. It is a day of rest, of family and friends, of thanksgivings.

June 6. It is the day we commemorate the brave soldiers who have sacrificed for our country.

In Korea, we take a moment to ponder for our soldiers and also hoist our country's flag from our homes.

You can see every, all the Korea's flag from outside, which is hoisted on the windows.

History tells we have had many encounters of battles and invasions. We have fought for Korea to stand strong and solitary.

Lives have been sacrificed. Soldiers took a stand.

This day, we give our great gratitude for the soldiers of Korea.

Ever heard of a bus that travels and offers unemployed women advice on how to snatch a job?

In Seoul, Korea. Yes. There is.

Don't forget. There also is at more local regions of Korea.

And this kind of job-consulting geared for females is not new.

It already has begun --years ago.

For starters, there's : 일자리부르릉. A pink colored bus that offers employment advice, education, consulting - all the sorts.

Has been running for more than 10 years! 👀👀

It's also not just jobs. They offer consulting on laws, real estate, welfare, rights and taxes.

When it comes to employment, it is all the more vital for especially women to join the task. Marital status, future pregnancy, child care can create problems but it is essential that females are looked after so they can also work, as well.

Today is March 1st --

It is a - March 1st Independence Movement Day - in Korea.

In year 1919, March 1st, Korean citizens peacefully protested against Japanese occupation of Korea and proclaimed for Korea's independence.

With the rumor that King GoJong of Korea has been poisoned, this news instigated the above independence movement of Korea.

That King GoJong was poisoned meant Korea's people were unfairly targeted and this roused anger among the citizens - hence starting a movement for Korea's independence - peacefully.

On this day, the Korean citizens held all kind of festivals.

Korea's this time then newspaper, The Independent, furthered the movement and encouraged the Korean people to celebrate this day.

"For every time that other countries hoisted their own each country's flag- how envious were we, the Korean citizens? We, along with our children, must prepare for this day of our independence movement and hold it as a parade. Today, let us celebrate for eternity and sing our hearts out on this joyous occasion!" - by The Independent newspaper.

Korea New Year (Seollal)

Today is one of Korea's biggest national holiday, the new year, which this time falls on Jan 25, 2020.

Most shops and businesses close on this day, and many travel to their family, to gather and celebrate and commerce.

The old tradition is that children dress in hanbok, bow (sebae), and receive allowance from the grandparents;

But now, it has gradually changed to having a big breakfast together and converse.

Some families still keep the tradition alive, but the most important thing is to reassert our family bonds and wish each other a plentiful new year.

"Jang-su ha sae yo!!" 장수하세요!!

Greetings, and thanks giving remarks are abundant, as above for example, states;

May we live to longevity- a 1000 years old!!

If you are family, it is all that matters.

Korea manners is that we are acquainted with our elders - a mother's friend, unrelated grandparents, a friend's mother, you get the gist.

There's hence a friendlier* - respectable - way to - call the elders.

Instead of the stereotypical "ajumma" we dub, the imagery associated with "ajumma" is middle-aged menopause women,

We can approach the more aged population by calling them a different name (apart from ajumma)

Auntie. Aunt.

We, yes, consider the elders as one of our aunts (for men, uncle) and form a respectable warm bond with them.

Dear aunt. Auntie Kim! Auntie Tracy!

It's all in the name, you know. 😆

Every winter in Korea, we all wait for that mouth-watering ....

Sellers take up a small temporary shop in the middle of the street and offer bread in the shape of fish that is filled with "sweet red bean paste."

It's called --> 붕어빵 and I tell you you must try at least once in your bucket list. 😆

By chance, or being just out on street, we get a taste of heaven from these vendors.

You get to learn everything there is to Korea's staple dish, kimchi and also witness kimjang culture.

Kimjang is the process that we take to make kimchi from scratch.

But, no, in Korea, there's a term that refers to cool, decent, and popular boys and girls.

For a male: it's called "KING-KA" (킹카)

For a female: "QUEEN-KA" (퀸카)

At schools, we dub rising male and female students to the above name, as acknowledgment -- rather, hats off to the sound students.

So: are you a queen-ka or king-ka?

I guess everyone is. 😗

Today is Hangul Proclamation day.

Sejong the Great, one of the king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea, created the korean alphabet and issued today as a day to commemorate.

Hangul is one of the beautiful, and scientific language created and has been in use since year 1443.

Here in Korea, we call our own kind of soap operas as "drama" (드라마); At night, around 10 p.m., many frequently tune into tv for a burst of drama drama.

It's safe to say we love some drama - from an audience perspective.

This "drama" is translated to soap opera in english but really, it is more like a tv play, longer version of a sitcom, tv show - rather of a storytelling.

If you think about it, Korea's tv "dramas" run for only 'one season' but have multiple 'episodes' to carry on a play-like script.

The content varies -> it can be romance, thriller, just any kind of movie- like storytelling except it's broken down to snipets - 1 hour long 'episodes.'

In the morning and at dinnertime, sitcoms are also aired but the duration is around 20 minutes.
