Our next adventure on a bike

Luke and I (Chuck) and my Pastor (Naas) are signed up to do the Dirty Kanza 200.

200 miles, one day, gravel roads, hills, in June in KS.

This will be a great test of endurance, especially for this old man.

Granny to Estes Park over Trail Ridge Road

Full stats for day 5. T in tent at 4:30 was 29. We were on our bikes at 6:20. T was 35. This was earlier than usual because we had to be inside the Rocky Mountain National park by 8 and it was 15 miles. We made it easily. We rode 63.2 miles in 4 hours and 55 minutes on the bike. The elapsed time was just under 6 hours. We climbed a total of 5400 feet and descended 5840 feet. Our peak altitude was 12,200 feet. Average speed was 12.9 mph. It could have been faster, but cars slowed us down on the descent. The steep part of the climb was 11.7 miles with 3000 feet of climbing. That is an average grade of 5 %. There were long stretches of 6+%. Some of the steepest parts were above 11,000 feet. It took me 1 hour 50 minutes to ride that 11.7 miles. During that time my average heart rate was 128 and my speed 6.4 mph. It was a tough climb. I'll post the profile next. Tomorrow promises to be trivial in comparison. 45 miles almost all downhill. The organizers had to change the route because of the fire in NW of Fort Collins where we finish. That shortened it about 7 miles and made it s bit easier. We won't know what to do with ourselves on the morning some we don't plan on leaving until 7:30 or. 8:00.

Day 5 stats

Short stats. Long later. Woke up at 4:30. 29 degrees in tent. We were on the bike at 6:20. It was 35. We rode 63.2 miles in 4 hours 55 minutes. We climbed 5400 feet. Peak altitude was 12,200 feet.

Day 4 recap and stats

Got up at 5, left tent city at 7. It was 30 in the tent when I woke up, 39 when we started. 96.2 miles, 6 hours 30 minutes riding time; 7 hours 30 minutes elapsed time. 5036 feet climbed. 7034 feet descended. 14.8 mph average. Our first 14 miles was tough to the top of Freemont Pass at 11,200 feet. It took us 1 hour 18 minutes. 1260 net climbing. 10.5 mph average. We had a 12+ mile section of unpaved road which ranged from hard packed dirt to loose gravel. It was almost all downhill and got a bit hairy in spots. It was hot at the end—high 80s. Only 65 miles tomorrow, but it includes Trail Ridge Road which Ewald at 12,000 feet. We have to be inside the Park by 8 so it will be an earlier morning than normal. We should be able to post pictures tomorrow.

Day 3, full stats

Started at 6:51. Temp was 39. We rode 84.48 miles, in 7 hours, 4 minutes. 7798 feet of climbing, 4042 feet of descending. 12.0 mph average. Peak altitude 12,095 feet on Independence Pass. Chuck's average heart rate was 120. During the steep parts of the climb, chuck averaged 7.2 mph. It was a hard day, compounded by 600 feet of elevation into a brisk wind coming into Leadville. Longest day tomorrow—93 miles. Net elevation drop of 2,000 feet. High point is 11,200.
