Context: As the DM, I’ve designed a tower that has more floors than I’ve planned encounters. One of the early floors is a large trap room that really unnerves the party. I decide to make the next floor empty so they can have a chance to breathe and regroup.

DM: You climb up the stairs and arrive at the doorway of the next floor. It seems to have been ransacked; you notice some broken furniture and a collapsed bookshelf, but otherwise, the room is empty.

Barbarian: Bullshit. I’m gonna make a perception check for traps. *rolls an average roll*

DM: You don’t perceive any danger to you. It really seems like the room is empty.

Rogue: Yeah, I don’t trust that. I roll a perception check to specifically check the ceiling for traps. *rolls a good roll*

DM: *trying to suppress laughter* You perceive no traps in the ceiling.

Shaman: Don’t walk in! She’s doing the evil smile!

Barbarian: What the hell is the difficulty check on this thing?

Warlord: We’re all going to get murdered.

Fifteen minutes of increasingly specific perception checks later:

Rogue: The room is actually empty, isn’t it.

DM: That’s what I’ve been telling you!

Shaman: I hate you.
