Stella Young, Inspiration Porn and the Objectification of Disability
ok, i don’t care for TED talks. but a TED talk seems like the perfect place for a visibly disabled person to disrupt inspiration porn narratives.
This is really great! Considering she’s addressing a probably mostly nondisabled audience `i can see why she phrased this the way she did, but I do want to make a note that for some disabled people, doing ‘little things’ CAN be an achievement. Rather, achievement should be something that is decided by an individual. So for some disabled people, getting out of bed and remembering our names in the morning regularly IS a huge deal. But even so, seeing that as something for me to be proud of rather than something that you view as ‘inspiring’ n a patronizing way is important. Unless you also have trouble getting out of bed and remembering your name, that achievement of mine shouldnt impress you. Just like for one nondisabled person, seeing a nondisabled person win an art award might not be ‘inspiring’ because they don’t have trouble with art or care about it, but they can still praise that person for their achievement because it is something they worked toward and are proud of themselves. (not sure if I phrased this the way I’m meaning, kinda foggy brained rn)
