Almost all Daeron Targaryen fanfic I've read has been meh. I'm sorry, the only one I've really loved is called “too far gone” by PacificHeights on Ao3, but it's super angsty, and I want more variety. Don’t like it? Don’t read it. Want something different with Daeron? Write it yourself. But don’t start slating every single author who takes the time to write something they are proud of, something other people enjoy, and something they share publicly for others TO enjoy, to escape into, to inspire others’ writing.

I have read fics that aren’t my cup of tea, sure. But do I comment on it? No. Because other people enjoy it, other people read it, other people like it. Because guess what? People have different tastes. That’s the beauty and variety of fanfic.

I don’t usually comment on shit like this, but this post really rubbed me the wrong way, because I, for one, have read several amazing Daeron fics, some of which were written by my Mutuals.

I try to keep away from the fandom drama but I had to reblog this one because the level of insolence writers must face these days is astonishing to me. The other day I read one of the best Valarr fanfics ever and saw someone saying it doesn't make sense in the comments. Meanwhile other people comment fics with nothing but "I want Part Two". People make posts in the tags about hating certain tropes, pairings etc. Not to mention feedback overall is a rarity these days.

It's tiring, honestly, and I keep telling myself I won't be writing again over and over again. But somehow I always go back, foolishly perhaps.

I am against saying "If you don't like it do it yourself" when art like movies and paintings and music is discussed. But when it comes to fan fiction which is content created by fans in their free time without any financial gain involved... Then indeed, you CAN write it yourself. Even just for yourself, without posting anywhere. Instead of being mean to others.

This kind of take is exactly why fandom spaces get so damn irritating. You are fully allowed to want more variety in Daeron fic. You are fully allowed to feel like a lot of stories don’t match how you read his character. That part is fine. The problem is the lazy, superior tone people like you always slap onto it, like fanfic writers are failing some official quality control check instead of writing in their spare time for no money, no obligation, and usually with more care than half the people criticizing them can manage in a single sentence.

“A lot of Daeron fanfic is meh” is such useless wording. Meh by what standard? Yours? 😂 Based on what? You liked one specific story and now everything else gets tossed under the bus because it doesn’t cater exactly to your preferred version of him? It contributes nothing except making writers feel like shit for not matching one random person’s private taste.

You can ask for more variety in Daeron fic without talking like fanfic writers are underperforming employees.

What happened to basic respect, kindness and encouragement in fandom? Instead writers can browse the tags for their favorite characters and see that their overall, collective effort to keep fandom alive and fun is publicly being called “meh”.

You are allowed to dislike and even critize fanworks. However there is a difference between saying what you like like it's the right opinion, and also not putting stuff in the tags where other writers might see it and take offence or not want to write anymore for this fandom/character. If you wanna critize something I would suggest to put it in a different way or either do it in your own blog without the main tags

Everyone here is doing it for free and for fun, and fandom is a community. We need to remember that writers are people too, and write for themselves first meaning a lot of stuff isn't your personal taste, and that's ok. Send love to the writer you love and interact with them!
