Just to clarify, there's a bill that would STOP credit card companies from controlling who's allowed to spend money on porn or "risque" (read: queer) content. If you don't think big business should be able to tell you what to spend your own damn money on, call your senators and reps to let them know! It's the Fair Access to Banking Act, H.R.987 in the House, S.410 in the Senate.
reposting from bsky, but heres a cheat sheet for how to properly send a message to payment processing companies over the recent highly conservative shift in where youre allowed to legally spend your money

Anti Censorship Cheat Sheet
Why? Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and Paypal have been censoring free speech and legal business on the internet for too long. Their most recent targets are Steam and Itch.io, but they have also been pressuring websites like Pixiv, Patreon, Fansly, Onlyfans and more for years, applying draconian standards for what kind of adult/pornographic content platforms and their users can host and sell. If we as consumers and creators want to regain ground on this issue, we have to make our voice heard.
How? Bombard them with phone calls. Collective Shout, the organization that lobbied to have Steam and Itch.io change their TOS, did so with only around 1000 phone calls. Visa and MC have backed down from pressuring Onlyfans to remove adult content entirely due to public backlash. Clogging their phone lines for an extended period, over a month at the absolute least, will almost guarantee that these companies will at least have to pay attention to the backlash. This list is not exhaustive, but some contact points for the 4 targets are:
Visa
US/Canada: +1-800-847-2911 US option selection for operator: 1-1-2 or 1-1-3
Mastercard
US: +1-800-307-7309 US option selection for operator: 1-1-2-2-2-1 Phone (outside US): 1-636-722-7111
Stripe
Headquarters: +1-888-963-8955 THE STRIPE HEADQUARTERS NUMBER NO LONGER WORKS. THE NEW NUMBER IS 877-887-7815 France: +33-805-11-19-67 Email: [email protected]
Paypal
US: +1-888-221-1161 Outside US: 1-402-935-2050 Customer Service: +1-877-569-1116
Try to hit all 4 targets per day. This is only going to have an effect if as many people as possible call every day as long as possible. This is a marathon, not a race. If you can, it is also a good idea to try to spread the word to organizations and groups that can either actively combat these huge companies legally, or can spread news, in a manner supportive of this movement, more effectively than your average person.
Examples of organizations:
ACLU Canadian Civil Liberties Association local legislators/gov representatives
Examples of spreading the news: local newspapers special interest publications videogame streamers

Okay hi! I did see an update about Stripe which I'll copy-paste here too.
⚠️ = Priority target for itch.io
Stripe is currently a major priority, as they have the ability to deny itch.io's eligibility to their services according to itch.io's owner.
UPDATE [2025-07-29] : Stripe has responded with the following statement:
Stripe has a policy against commenting on users. Generally speaking, we take action when we conclude that users violate our terms of service. We do not support adult content.
A new number has been added to Stripe. Keep calling.

and i know people mean well when they give employment advice but god damn some of them its like "did you try submitting your resume to a place that is hiring" fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck no kidding. shit. ive just been printing them out and eating them. yeah thanks i'll try that
Ok but no joke we live in a hellscape now so this is now ACTUALLY applicable advice. Let me explain.
You see a job on Indeed, you apply. Clearly this place is hiring, it’s posting on Indeed!
We live in a hellscape now.
They’re not ACTUALLY hiring.
Why do they post fake openings on job boards?
Gathering a talent pool. There’s no actual open job you can take immediately. They want a list of qualified candidates in case someone drops dead of a heart attack. They waste your time so they don’t waste theirs in an emergency.
Tricking their employees. (Look we’re hiring! This current workload won’t be forever! Keep it up it’s just the short term!) (Don’t worry about getting laid off, we’re actively expanding so we’re doing great! Don’t look for better jobs and figure out if the grass actually is greener- it’s fine here!) (Keep on your toes, we might be looking to fire you and replace you! Work harder or we’ll do it!)
Using you as a guinea pig. Who applies when we put the salary this high? This low? How low is too low? How high stops yielding better candidates? How many people are desperate for this job? What happens if we tweak the description this way, do different people apply if we describe the job differently? How high quality of a candidate can we get to agree to do the maximum for the lowest amount?
If they take government contracts they need to give a certain number of people an interview just to prove they didn’t hire a nepo baby and genuinely tried to find an unrelated great candidate. They hire the nepo baby anyways.
The job market is tough, but what if part of the struggle isn’t just competition, what if some of the job openings aren’t even real? Many ca
The ghost jobs haunting your career search - Stack Overflow
How do you spot a fake/ghost posting and make sure you’re only applying to an actually open job?
It’s hard as fuck to spot these bastards. There are some warning signs but it’s not foolproof because they’re literally paying people to try to make these look as realistic as possible.
The job is always posted. You’ll only notice this if you’ve been looking a while. Sometimes it may be taken down but posted back up quickly with different wording.
There’s different versions of this job slightly tweaked all posted from the same company.
The job isn’t actually on their website and is only on the job boards. Companies will often have sections of their website where they list the jobs they’re seeking to fill and sometimes will also have a place to submit a resume. If the job isn’t listed on the website, ESPECIALLY if it’s a large company with a big staff dedicated to managing hiring, that job board posting is probably fake.
What’s actually useful to do?
Make a list of companies you want to work for. Go directly to their website and apply there if you can.
Talk to your friends and previous coworkers. If a real life person looks you in the face and says they know a job opening in their office, it’s legit.
Read the job posting carefully. Too vague? Reads like ChatGPT? Salary wildly all over the place? Either it’s a fake or these people suck so much you don’t want to work there anyways. Apply to listings that look legit now that you know some warning signs. It’s not perfect but if you spot even one fake job posting you’ve saved yourself time.
This is the shortest number of bullet points for a reason. It’s hard to find anything actionable and useful to offer because these things are infestations in every job board.
It’s a damn hellscape out here and I hate it.

Mosquitoes actually are not replaceable in any ecosystem that naturally has them and that includes replacing them with any of the non biting species because these are the traits that make them so core to food webs:
Tiny
Can use every single pool of moisture to raise generations no matter how dirty and stagnant and low in oxygen
Can fly
Males get by on just sugars
Females take protein from larger animals to manufacture thousands more eggs
All these things combined allow thst ecosystem to make huge volumes of insects from conditions barren to most other macroscopic life. You might think there are other insects that seem to make huge massive swarms out of nothing but there's really nothing that hits all the same qualities *except other insects that also suck blood.*
It's the precise combo of being able to "prey" on things millions of times larger and breed in nothing but a few drops of filthy rainwater or the moisture in a rotten log. That's the most efficient combination for anything that size to multiply that rapidly where nothing else can even survive, except of course the things that can move in because they eat them :)
A lot of people ask "could they just not be itchy though?" and I regret to inform that isn't actually their doing, there's no evolutionary advantage to making you itchy. That's your own body detecting the intrusion of another creature's saliva into your skin, where it doesn't belong, and reacting with histamines.
If you've ever been bit hard enough by a cat, dog or even human you may notice a similar effect!
I remember having a conversation with someone about my hummingbird banding volunteering and how the data went toward support for conservation efforts among other things.
They were all for that, and loved hummingbirds and supported it!
And made a quip about how the only thing they wanted to see extinct were mosquitoes and small biting insects/fruit flies.
40 to 60% of a hummingbird’s diet, and their main source of other nutrients, is small, soft bodied insects.
Including mosquitoes and fruit flies.
They had a massive struggle not wanting to accept that no fruit flies and mosquitoes = no hummingbirds.
Bluebirds also eat tons of mosquitoes!
I've also added this on other big threads about this topic but I should add it here: Being INCREDIBLY OBNOXIOUS to larger animals, even when they aren't spreading any pathogens (and again, most mosquitoes don't!) actually is another vital purpose. Ecosystems need biting and stinging things to keep big, stompy, hungry beasts from getting too cozy. Mammals are the most resource-hogging animals in almost any biome but parasites can inhibit their growth a little (a good thing), discourage them from spending as much time in the same area or ward them away from whole areas to begin with. Mosquitoes in particular breed in filthy, stagnant bacteria-rich water. You know what leaves behind conditions like that? ANIMALS! Animals eating all the plants, wallowing in the mud and shitting everywhere! A herd of ungulates can turn a lush and healthy marsh into just a cesspit if nothing stops them. But it's mosquitoes that find a cesspit an appealing nursery. And then you get a cloud of mosquitoes so dense that the ungulates move on! There used to be a great BBC documentary that actually showed "mosquito season" driving a mass migration of African megafauna but the shittified search engines right now are only showing me articles about mosquito control no matter how I try to find this again, gee thanks, maybe someone else can find it? So while the "mosquitoes are bad" all the big animals leave for months. Months of the plants growing back, months of the water clearing up until it's drinkable again (and the mosquito larvae themselves are filter feeders!), months of the mosquitoes becoming food for tiny birds and lizards and arachnids and amphibians, and the beautiful wetland is back again strong enough to survive the repeat of that cycle the next year. Everything you hate in nature - the ticks, the territorial wasps, the stinging plants - are pretty much nature's immune system. Obviously this doesn't mean the big mammals are "bad" either. The cycles of destruction are themselves also something ecosystems come to rely on as a regulatory force :)

you can't be a disabled ally without also supporting homeless people and addicts like it's just not possible
"Punishment works!!!" We're drowning in three to four generations of people so pants-shittingly terrified of ever being wrong that half of everyone has constructed a worldview wherein they never even consider the possibility that they could be wrong and the other half behaves like one wrong move will make anything or anyone explode violently into a million irreperable pieces. I don't think it works guys
"AI Engorgement" refers to the phenomenon where an AI model absorbs too much misinformation in its training data. This corrupts the model's base truth, leading to strange glitches. An engorged image model, when prompted to create images for "cat" and "historical", generated the following:
AI Engorgement may trigger a complete dissolution of truth within a model, leading it to back conspiracy theories, clearly debunked facts, and mistake fiction for reality. It is believed that the systematic siphoning of unreality by AI datasets is already revealing signs of engorgement in every major model.
the people who go "we shouldn't be so open about nudity because it could trigger someone's dysphoria" are like two steps max removed from "fat people being fat in public could trigger someone with an ed". like peoples' bodies are not the problem here, trying to restrict someone else's body because of how you personally feel is indistinguishable from conservative praxis. i'm sorry if that sounds harsh but there is basically no interpretation of "we need to control the bodies of [demographic]" that does not fall down the slippery slope of fascism.
Kinda wild how most people generally recognize that the "too sick to go to school, too sick to watch tv/play games" mindset our parents had was bullshit but still impose essentially the exact same rules on disabled adults and scrutinize them for enjoying low-energy hobbies while being too fatigued or in pain to work a full time job (or any job at all)
what abled ppl think is a massive problem for disabled folks: 13 year old on the internet faking something
what is actually a massive problem for disabled folks: "well you don't LOOK disabled, are you sure you're not faking? I'm not giving you accommodations until you PROVE you're not faking. Please give me, a stranger, your medical info and explain your condition to me in detail so I know you're not faking and only then will I respect or take you seriously"
