Soup opera is an interesting example of stop motion animation using a simplified/stylized form and attempting to create animal movements using these constants.

A change of plans

My idea has evolved and changed over the last few weeks. I was planning to animate a second experience using stop motion animation, this time using origami models as stop motion puppets. I have found this a very interesting process and have now decided to change my plans specifically to focus more greatly on this technique.

Introduction

I aim to create accurate representations of animal movements using only paper and origami.

Why origami

Origami is wonderfully simple and accessible, virtually every one can get paper of some form.

Origami is also an interesting challenge for the animator; it is stylized, simplified and unrealistic. I feel that a good animator should be able to bring stylized forms to life using movement. This is one of the things that makes animation and especially stop motion especially appealing.

Story

The story would be basic, this is because I don't want to anthropomorphize the animals. I want them to act like animals and not do anything they would not do if they were real animals.

Process

Over the next few weeks I will make a few short studies of animals; from there I might do on to create a longer animation.

This is the second experience I will use for my animation:

"I took Japanese at school and went to Japan on a school trip in year 11, I was 15. Such a great experience. This one time, me and a group of us decided we wanted to go to a seaside town, we got there, had loads of fun, and on the way back missed the direct shinkansen back to where we were staying in Hiroshima, which meant we got totally lost.

We were supposed to get back by 7pm, and when we turned up at 11:30 the entire rest of the group had been made to stay up and wait for us as well as the teachers while we got a good old stern telling off. "

I would animate this using origami figures with wire armatures.

Process diary 12/6/2012

I have completed my semester project. I am not entirely happy with it, mostly because the timing. The issue is that it is I animated a series of short sections of animation then tried to stick them together. Having spent so much times with each section of animation I didn't realize how short and choppy they would feel when edited together.To improve this in the future I would make the sound track first rather than having individual sounds as I did this time.

I chose to edit together the final version without indications of what is happening such as subtitles or voice overs or voices. The reason for this is that all the other pieces I am planning for this series are going to be just as or more cryptic than this one. Therefore I don't feel the need for them to make sense. When I have completed the two others planned I think the first oneBorrowed memory one (Busking)will make more sense.

I have been considering different display possibilities such as display in a gallery with the models also displayed, as one film with black screen and titles in between etc.

Although I am fairly unhappy with my project I feel it is a success in some respects. I have taught myself to use stop motion pro. I have made a lot of mistakes that I will never make again.

My animation of the day for today is my favorite short animated TV show "Potatoes and Dragons".

For today's animation the wonderful music video for Hearts a mess by Gotye directed by Brendan Cook. I think this has a beautiful look and amazing timing.

How they make Stoopid Monkey, a 2D stop motion show animated on a glass plate combined with real footage.

This is the first test I made with stop motion pro. I simply photographed the screen then moved the camera in between photographs.
