The reason I think OFMD feels like fanfiction (affectionate) is that it's so incredibly earnest, in a way we're just not used to really seeing. It never feels the need to point and laugh at the earnest whimsy of it all, it never makes a joke of queerness, and it never gets annoyingly self-referential in the way media that's too worried about its own image will be (you all know how Marvel movies have characters be like "ooh wasn't that weird? we have to point out how a weird thing is happening so the audience knows we're cool and above that." that thing never happens).

They want Stede to write the man he loves little love letters every day? He kisses the bottles before he throws them into the ocean. He lays awake thinking about a moment where he almost kissed Ed under the moonlight. He has dreams of running to Ed across a beach.

They have a character who wants to feel like he deserves to get married so bad, and who also wants to feel safe to explore more feminine gender expression? They have him paint a bride cake topper to look like himself.

They want a character to make the decision to live because he hears the voice of the man he loves, challenging his belief that no one cares if he lives or dies? They have his lover appear to him as a beautiful mermaid and give him a huge, lovesick smile, and it's sweet and campy and 100% genuine.

I'm used to seeing so many of the things in OFMD in media as just jokes. A fat, Black man being seen as extremely desirable. Women of color in positions of authority. Queer love and desire. Drag shows! But OFMD never, ever punches down, and it's always so earnest, and it cares so much.

Just...damn. I feel lucky every time I think about it. We've got a special show here.

about adhd

it concerns me that people really don’t know that adhd isn’t a personality type or behavioral problem.

adhd isn’t someone who’s personality is driven by fun and disorder.

adhd is someone who’s brain goes all over the place looking for dopamine, because it doesn’t make or register enough of it, and when it finds a source of dopamine, it hyperfixates on it. it’s about deregulation of attention as well as emotions.

it’s not a person who can’t behave. a person with adhd can look like a lot of things. misconceptions about what adhd looks like kept me from even looking for a diagnosis, and it also kept myself and others (professionals, even) from taking my suspicions seriously.

Smart people can have ADHD. And a lot of the time, they compensate for the ADHD with intelligence- until they reach the point where they just can’t overcome it anymore, which is why a lot of gifted + ADHD people have good grades their whole lives and then “suddenly” crash and burn. For some it’s college, for some it’s grad school, for some it’s postgrad or professional exams like the bar. Whenever the things they have to do can no longer be brute-forced at the last minute.

ADHD is often lumped in with learning disabilities but it’s really a DOING disability. We know what we should do. Probably we know six ways to do it. The trouble is actually getting our brains to activate so we CAN do it. Sometimes it’s like you’re being controlled by aliens or something because you say “I need to do X” and you’re going to do it and you just. Don’t.

I appreciate the way this guy explains the ADHD brain.

I hadn’t heard someone explain ADHD as a delay or impairment of certain aspects of cognitive development before. The process of internalizing external input shapes our ability to plan/predict, and moderate/modify behaviors so that would explain the adhd challenge of adapting to changing variable sets. I also like his description of the effects ADHD can have on retaining information, and the ADHD struggle of translating internal motivation into external action, how the brain can read the intention to act as the act itself, and just sort of consider the job done. That explains a lot about issues with memory, procrastination, motivation, perfectionism, as well as the origins of behaviors like masking, emotional disregulation, falling into old habits and struggling to form new ones.

It really did help me to understand ADHD as a neurological/cognitive disorder, not a psychological condition, behavioral disorder, or a mental illness. ADHD symptoms manifest on functional, cognitive, chemical levels. They aren’t the result of trauma, upbringing, conditioning, or a personality disorder.

He’s a real interesting perspective worth listening to.

I haven’t looked into much about him personally though so I’m hoping there’s not something deeply fucked up about him I babyhood heard. Insofar as providing a ton of useful context on the hows and whys of ADHD symptoms, I find him extremely informative and useful in helping neurotypicsl folks in my life understand a little more of my experience. I’ve cried a lot from hearing him put clear language to things I had been suffering with for the 35yrs before I was diagnosed. He’s definitely worth a listen if audio/ video works for you better than text.

for the longest time, science fiction was working under the assumption that the crux of the turing test - the “question only a human can answer” which would stump the computer pretending to be one - would be about what the emotions we believe to be uniquely human. what is love? what does it mean to be a mother? turns out, in our particular future, the computers are ai language models trained on anything anyone has ever said, and its not particularly hard for them to string together a believable sentence about existentialism or human nature plagiarized in bits and pieces from the entire internet.

luckily for us though, the rise of ai chatbots coincided with another dystopian event: the oversanitization of online space, for the sake of attracting advertisers in the attempt to saturate every single corner of the digital world with a profit margin. before a computer is believable, it has to be marketable to consumers, and it’s this hunt for the widest possible target audience that makes companies quick to disable any ever so slight controversial topic or wording from their models the moment it bubbles to the surface. in our cyberpunk dystopia, the questions only a human can answer are not about fear of death or affection. instead, it is those that would look bad in a pr teams powerpoint.
