It's actually theorized he was using Kat's "parts" to mark places in the Backrooms. When Mary first enters the Backrooms, there's a scene where she sees the backwards Stop Sign. If you look really, *really* close in the corner and in the dark there is a hand lying there and flies buzzing around...

Some think that hand belonged to Kat...
