This time in high school history we were playing jeopardy and the question was "This classic novel was written by John Steinbeck in 1939..." and this kid raises his hand answers "The Wrath of Grapes."

1. Commence life of tragic love

It all begins with a tragic story of young love and the definition of almost childhood sweethearts. I was four, he was four, and naturally, he had cooties. We lived in the same town and went to the same preschool, and there are dozens of pictures of me, with my un-explicably straight hair compared to now, and him, with his ridiculously poodle curly hair, pushing each other in wagons, playing with butterflies, sewing books and harvesting chicken eggs, all normal preschool activities, of course. Our parents were friends so we spent a lot of our time together, playing slap jack or causing havoc in the forest. Naturally, as it often inevitably happens, I eventually started crushing on him and became overtaken by the throws of four-year-old love. I decided I had to eventually tell him how I felt, and with my love-letter writing skills not yet operational, I asked my older sister to transcribe the letter for me. Sitting on the floor while my sister knelt at the table, I poured my little heart out into what I was sure would win over my prince charming. I was prepared to give it to him when I saw him the next day, but my parents somehow caught wind of the scheme *cough cough my loose tongued sister* and forbade me from giving him the letter because they feared he would share it with his friends and I would get teased for it (though ironically my family has never let me live the story down and still make fun of me for it to this day). Heartbroken, I was forced to live out the rest of my childhood in love with a boy who would never think of me in that way. With me now off at college halfway around the world and him doing who knows what with his life, sometimes I wonder if we saw each other now we would instantly re-kindle that flame from our past that was cut short, or as usual, just in my head.
