i thought that it would be good to make a book review about this book (the lost world by michael crichton) for it has dominated my mind. then, i think i am suspect to talk about because i have a tendency to like everything that has dinosaurs, but here it is: i enjoyed this so hard! i acknowledge that it has its defaults and i will talk about it too, i also must tell you that you will find spoiler here, ok. firstly, when i took this book to read i got completely astonished when saw IAN MALCOLM be mentioned in the synopsis. like, he was dead! (i like ian malcolm and i enjoyed his returning from the dead though it has not had a good explanation, like, he was at island nublar when it was exploded! but ok, i like it i like him. well, this fact made laugh so hard because it remembered me when doyle had to bring sherlock holmes back from the dead because he needed to continue the stories of the detective, and i think the same happened with the lost world. because of the movie, ian malcolm became a popular character, then the author resolved to bring him back to the sequel novel, even that he had to break the barriers of the death lol.
in the sequel, we met richard levine, a character who is the cog that makes the story happen. he is that typical genius arrogant and some characters call him "pain in the ass", but at the same time he is brilliant! he has a world reputation actually (i hope you notice the reference). because of levine, this reckless and impetuous man, malcolm decided to go back to an island with two dinosaurs per square meter. i must remember you that malcolm was a man traumatized by dinosaurs. some people says that the motivation of his return to an island with dinosaurs was not good enough, but i disagree. malcolm already had a motivation to go back, he wanted to prove his theory about extinction, levine put himself in a situation of damsel in distress just pushed malcolm to that island earlier. well, well, then here we are; now malcolm, thorne, eddie are in the island sorna (arby and kelly are there too, because there is always time to cause trauma in the children) and after we have sarah harding (with baselton, dogson and howard).
i think the first part of this book very good, it got me since the beginning. my complaints are about the second part, some little things like: hmm, i really didn't considered that explanation of malcolm for the bodies of the duck-billed dinosaurs which were at the raptors' nest. my dear, are you telling me that those all duck-billed dinosaurs encountered their end in the river (or close to it), then the river took their bodies and left them in a dark corner of the forest. so the raptors, seeing all that free food, decided to make their nest right there? hmmm malcolm had more morphine in his body than blood when he said that then i forgive him for that absurd. i really did not like this explanation, i think it a bit (a lot) vague. but if you liked it is okay, and if you want to tell me that you liked this explanation please comment here! i need to talk about this book with someone who doesn't be my dog.
now i will say two word very important and you have to give me all your attention: sarah harding. for a moment in the first part of this book i thought that sarah was be only the ex-girlfriend of malcolm (and i adored that the novel doesn't try to make ian and sarah a couple again), but not! sarah was fantastic, pursuing that raptor on her motorcycle, and doing a series of others incredible things that she did to saves all those men (levine and malcolm especially, don't forget that malcolm turned into the damsel in distress in the second part of it, and levine, well, he is he).
ahhh i almost forgot to comment about, but i have noticed that some people seems doesn't like levine. this left me really surprised. though i acknowledge levine is a bit annoying (typical rich and very smart and arrogant man) i liked him. he has a fascination for dinosaurs (he is paleontogist, is not he?) and for some moments he simply forgot himself, putting himself in a dangerous position many times only to have a look better at those animals. it was not hard like him. his obsession with all those prehistoric creatures, his hope of them still keeping in some hidden corner of this big world, his questions about the nature of that island, habits of the animals, all of this made me sympathise with him. seriously, he took a bicycle to pursue that tyrannosaurus. god, i laughed so hard when he did that and malcolm got perplexed "i should not have involved with him", he said (or something like this because i read this book in portuguese).
other thing that bothered me in the end it was the fact that malcolm hurt his leg again. he has no lucky. i was waiting (hoping) that in this book he was a heroic moment, but it not happened. he was only the damles in distress again. and i also was waiting, since the beginning of this book, that he had that conversation about his past, all that thing about ingen, dinosaurs eating his leg and etc. sarah obviously had her suspicions. levine? he knew. but no one of them went to confront malcolm about that. perhaps it had no time for it too, like, the dinosaurs was with the devil in their skins.
but it is nothing that a fanfic cannot fix.
to finish, i really like this book. when it was the climax i cannot think anything that was not this book. it dominated my mind, i got nervous, i got trembled as if that raptor had breathing on my own neck. i recommend this book—this duology—to everyone who likes adventures, a bit of horror, and dinosaurs. yes, you will like, and especially i recommend it to everyone who watched the movie. i grow watching these movies many times and i noticed that the first movie (jurassic park) is a little different of the first book. now—today—i will watch the second movie (i watched this movie last time 8 years ago i do not remember anything lol). i have some suspicious that the second movie is a lot different of the lost world book, but i will talk more about it after i watch.
