Paper Swans, Paper Cuts

This collage art video piece features speedily moving imagery to disorient the viewer and make them watch again and again to find little details. It tells a little story of how the wings of a swan are clipped and a new creature emerges.

I had not noticed it as I was preparing the project but this speedy, disorienting movement may indeed be giving the harsh effect of a paper cut.

The music is done by me with singing and MIDI instruments.

The artist statement visual’s new version has been used. To refer to the previously chosen artist to mimic, who does contemporary miniature art with manuscript textures, a paper texture has been used (In the final video version).

Just as the warmup project, ‘Junk Swan’, the swan here is meant to be a portraiture of me and my essence.

The music box induces a sense of pain not only through the writhing causing melody, and the disturbing imagery, but also through the mechanism itself, for in order to work it, one has to put immense effort to rotate the handle, sometimes leaving the hands red and aching.

The natural materials are left unpainted and unaltered, to offer a sense of rawness and transparency.

This is to be a ‘broken’ music box called the ‘Swan Bard’

I started off with a clay figure to depict a distorted swan form but clay ended up cracking and it was also rather heavy for the spring to carry. Hence, I changed my approach and prepared a broken swan figure with fabric, wire, cotton and tissue paper. One may also see sketches for the posture of the animalistic entity. Rest of the images show the preparation of the music box mechanism.

Automata Warm Up: Process & Theory

I wanted to utilize a swan as a framework for this warm up project since swans mean various important aspects for me:

The swan being my favourite animal, hereby represents my wishes to be graceful and elegant, albeit timidly I try, endeavoring to fit into the box of a shy, scared, feminine figure of grace and lovely mannerisms.

However, the swan representing grace and elegance is not present in me. I am neither feminine in my expression nor elegant hence the clash and the birth of a junk swan, me as a junk swan, an assemblage of readymade concepts of what makes a swan a swan, but failing to create a beautiful swan out of these definitions.

According to Deleuze and Guattari, the swan in between, the junk swan of the liminal space would perhaps be explained with the theory of becoming-other and becoming animal. Instead of a molar entity of a human and a perfect swan, the molecular junk swan in process and progress emerges, neither its own entity and fixed identity nor either one of these binary oppositions.

Remorse

(Ottoman miniature art study)

Task: To study an artist in the contemporary art scene, and try mimicking their style to reflect the concept of ‘remorse’ . The artist I were to study was Murat Palta ( mr.muratpalta @ IG). This trial not only showed me how hard it is to draw in an Ottoman miniature style that disregards certain rules and conventions such as perspectives, but also my appreciation for the hard work and imagination of the artist increased tenfold.

What is being shown: Remorse as a stabbing, heavy feeling. A war between good and evil of conscience of the very same person, hence the repetition of figures. The remorse of the spectators who merely stare outside their windows yet do not interfere.

Recognizing Artist Patterns

The artist I wanted to study was Murat Palta (mr.muratpalta @ Instagram) The first two images showcase his works whilst the last one is my art piece inspired by his stylistic approach and the artist patterns I recognized.

Murat Palta is a contemporary miniature artist whose works feature popular culture integrated into traditional Ottoman miniature style. What makes him a contemporary artist is that he responds to the global environment through contemporary culture elements such as meme references, pop culture figures and events, visual elements from the the current era as in street culture and so on and so forth.

In my showcase of the of the theme ‘remorse’, I too used outlines, patterned structures, framing done through the stylistic heart depiction and of course the miniature art figures and faces. As with the miniature style, in my work too, there is no proper sense of perspective, which was actually a setback for me, for setting up a composition was difficult. Rather than being hierarchical thanks to the perspective, my work ended up being detail oriented with little references being buried within. Such was the aim, yes, though it was visually straining and challenging on my behalf. One reference would be that I included contemporary graffiti on the walls to further enhance the remorse aspect for the viewer’s understanding of the theme.

Inktober Day 2: Scurry

Maedhros looked upon the horizon, or absence of it, with blinding light seeping through the door, memories of that haunting night amongst dozens more, appearing, squealing, leaping like scurrying animals. Moments would dart across his eyes, from right to a little bit less right, and he knew with all his heart, he was never right, not one bit.

Artist Statement

My canvas is empty yet scarred with scribbles and scabs of paint. I am an artist with no shame nor guilt: Upon talking about doubt, daunting days, depression

I speak. I speak through incomplete lines, intertwined. I speak with mess and mud.

My work is all experimental without much prior calculation. With an automated script and soul, I drip my words onto the coroded canvas. I like incompleteness, as long as it tells a story. My story. I am incomplete just as my works, forever in progress, never to be finished.

I am a concept art book, with many stories to depict.
