Parade of Sails - PortlandME
July 18th, El Galeon and other tall ships like USCG Barque Eagle, Picton Castle, Oliver Hazard Perry and the schooner, Lynx, made their way through the Casco Bay in the 2015 Parade of Sails to kick off Tall Ships Portland. It may not have been the best weather but that didnât stop the hundreds of people who came to watch as the ships unfurled their sails.Â

During her 2015 East Coast Tour, El Galeon and her crew spent Americaâs Independence Day in Manhattan, one of five famous New York boroughs. From the ship, you can see the amazing firework spectacle displayed by the city. On the ship, visitors enjoyed a wild pirate party hosted by Hornblowers Events & Cruises!

Meet Juanmi...
Juan Miguel â 27 â Algeciras
âYou got it man,â says Juan Miguel jokingly as he does his best impersonation of Al Pacino from the classic 1983 crime drama Scarface. Itâs his way of agreeing to anything.
Painting is a regular task on board El Galeon, strapped to a harness, Juan Miguel hangs off the side of the ship to add a fresh coat.Â
Juan Miguel, also known as Juanmi, joined El Galeon last year when the ship was in south Florida as they were finishing up the last of their 2014 East Coast Tour. Like most of the crew, this was his first time in the United State and he spent most of it exploring the different cities in Florida. âMiami is my favorite without a doubt,â said Juanmi, whoâs visited Floridaâs melting pot twice so far. âItâs an explosion of fun.â
While heâs enjoyed his time in Florida, exploring places like Saint Augustine, El Galeonâs American home port, Tampa and Key West, thereâs still no place like home. âThere are a lot of nice state parks and the beaches are the best,â said Juanmi, who surfs in his spare time. He also misses having the options to mountain bike and snowboard. âFlorida is too flat.â
While Juanmi hopes his degree in nautical engineering will land him a job working on a merchant vessel like an oil or chemical tanker, life at sea was not his original path. âI studied another degree in land surveying,â said Juanmi, which is the science of determining the terrestrial position of points and the distances and angles between them. This requires mathematics, physics, engineering and the law.
In the end, he chose the sea over land. Now, after four years of schooling, Juanmi is looking to earn his officers license. âI need one years practice,â said Juanmi, who has spent half of that time on El Galeon. âWhen Iâm finished I will be a 3rd officer.â

Meet Karen...
Karen - 41 - Seville
"I love sailing. I feel free and all my problems go away," said Karen, one of two photographers volunteering aboard the 16th century replica. Before joining El Galeon, Karen was a photography teacher at Imago Center in Spain and has been a professional photographer for ten years. "The experience on the Galeon is the perfect combination for my passion for photography and my passion for the sails."
During a tour of El Galeon, Karen explains the use of the bell on the shipâs forecastle deck.
While Karen has been practicing photography all of her life, a hobby she inherited from her father and grandfather, she has a degree in architecture. When it came down to choosing what she wanted to do for the rest of her life, photography won. Her favorite type of photography is portraits. "It's a way to take a little of the soul," said Karen, who also specializes in weddings, families and fashion photography.
During her time aboard El Galeon, Karen hopes to gain more experiences not just on a personal level but also on a photographic level. "I want to tell life stories of people through pictures so it is very important for me to gain experience in travel," said Karen. "In photography it is very important to learn at all times."
While most of the crew are volunteering in pursuit of licenses in their maritime fields, Karen is here on assignment and is being sponsored by her photography school, Imago Center and Fujifilm to test out new equipment for their project Smiling in the Wind. "There is a lot of responsibility," said Karen, who spends much of her time documenting the lives of the crew members on board. As she test out the new Fujifilm equipment, all the photos she takes and information she gathers will eventually go into an online blog, book and visual exposition.

LETHAL & BEAUTIFUL - ANATARCTIC SNAPSHOTS
Frank Hurley (Australian,1885-1962)
1914-1962
Australian photographer, Frank Hurley embarked on a dangerous and obscure adventure on Ernest Shackletonâs Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition from 1914 to 1916. This journey is one of the most remarkble stories of survival in history. On an open boat, navigating over 800 miles in mountainous seas by Shackleston and his crew, Hurley had the honor of documenting this beautiful but lethal experience. Surprisingly, no lives were lost. Only 120 of the 520 negatives from the expedition survived. The remaining 400 negatives were smashed so Hurley would no attempt to reboard Endurance, the sinking ship.Â
