Day 19: Who Is Your Idol?

According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, an idol is “someone who is admired and respected very much.” In that case, the answer is simple really. My idol is my lovely wife Lili. She’s brave and beautiful, smart and sensitive. She makes our house feel like a real home.

Although it was probably one of the hardest decisions she ever made, she left the place she grew up in so that she could make her own choices and live the life she wanted. Not be forced to conform to expectations and be tied to a partner she didn’t care about and would never love.

When she left she had to start over from scratch. A job and a place to live. Luckily she found a friend in Sierra, and a place to work, StoryBook House, Sierra’s school. She moved from place to place, never staying too long in case her past caught up with her. It wasn’t until she met a young girl who was dual-natured like her that she thought maybe she could put down roots. Emma and her grandmother helped her find her brother and his best friend. Two people she missed terribly when they left years before just like she did.

While all that was going on, she taught classes my son attended. She encouraged and inspired him to work harder than ever. We met and became friends. Tied together by our feelings for Austin, my son. Over time we grew very close. So close that she felt it was time to explain about her differences. First, telling me and then telling Austin with me. When Austin accepted her news with no hesitation, I knew that I wanted her to be part of our family permanently. Our wedding was a magical winter wonderland almost two years ago.

Despite her fears and uncertainty when she arrived in the French Quarter, Lili never let her students feel anything but how much she cared for them and was rooting for them to succeed. Through her, our family had grown by leaps and bounds. My son and I have never been happier. Our home is full of laughter, love, and trust. I couldn’t ask for or imagine a better partner.
