How to comment on fanfictions
Comments are the one thing that keep fanfiction writers going. I canāt say that often enough and it has been definitely true for me. But back when Iāve started reading fanfictions I didnāt really know that every writer really does appreciate comments and what kind of comments writers would appreciate. Thatās why I wanted to make a post that might hopefully give some inspiration to those who never know what to say when commenting on a story. Feel free to add to it! Iāll be using some of the comments I got as examples, so if you find your own comment in this post, know that I have really appreciated it.Ā
Just know that nice comments are never ever annoying. Never.Ā
1. List what youāve likedĀ
āReally enjoyed the chapter. I liked that Merc and Yang resolved their little fight in the same chapter it started. Shows they have a stable, healthy relationship. Also, great scene with Em and Blake. I liked how she compared how Blake was physically similar but otherwise very different from Cinder.ā
āLmao favorite part was Jauneās failed plushie protestersā
āJunior makes a cameo as a shady apartment manager lmao. XDā
Really, listing the things youāve liked about a chapter or story as a whole does make our day. Of course you can say why you liked something, but just saying that youāve liked it is awesome already. There is no better thing than reading that someone liked the very same things that youāve also enjoyed while writing the story. Pointing out one thing is enough already.Ā
2. Emotional reactionsĀ
āMy emotions did not sign up for this field tripā
āWaitā¦. where did the fluff go? Who ordered extra onions?ā
āBut like seriously, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh OMG, EVA!!!!!!! THAT WAS SO GOD DAMN CUTE!!!!!! AND ROSE IS HERE, LIKE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.ā
āEva NO!ā
Seriously, this is amazing. Yell at us. Cry. Complain about all the feels. Knowing that our writing made you feel something is so rewarding.
3. Ask questionsĀ
āAwesome chapter, canāt wait for the next one and Effie has Mercās eyes?ā
We love talking about our stories. We might not always reply, and sometimes we canāt tell you any spoilers, but I love it when readers ask questions, because it gives me an excuse to talk about my story and it shows that you care.Ā
4. Quote the fanfictionĀ
āā¦I know guys like him. He doesnāt see a person, he sees a girl with boobs and thinks Iām a machine you put shitty jokes in and sex falls out.ā XD
āOnly if you call her daddy tonight.ā and omg iām in tears xD xD xD
Just quoting your favourite line and adding some emojis might seem lazy to you, but I absolutely love it when readers do that. It shows me which lines the reader enjoyed most and is one of my favourite things. Not much effort for you and very rewarding for the reader, so itās a win-win!
5. Just say that you like it
āHah I already am in loveā
āA really good start. Keep up the great workā
āLoved it!ā
āIāM SO READYā
āAw yeah! Loved it!ā
Those comments arenāt long and they might not seem like much to you, but they mean the world to me. It shows that someone has actually read the story. Sometimes it can feel like youāre posting into a void, but every comment that just says āLoved it!ā means that one person has read this chapter and liked it.Ā
Of course we all love long comments, but not everyone has the time for that, and not everyone always knows what to say. A simple short comment is always appreciated and you should never feel bad for leaving a short comment. You can always come back and leave a second longer comment if you want, but if you donāt get around doing it you will at least have shown your appreciation and made your favourite writer smile.Ā
Hope this helps all of the readers out there feeling shy/anxious about commenting, especially this:

Folks, yes at times it feel unsatisfactory to just say a few mere words. But it lets us authors know you exist.
(also thanks OP, good positive post, i like it)
