Anyone who plans on reading this series STOP RIGHT NOW and go read it. Despite my thoughts on its ending, I have thoroughly enjoyed the series and its characters up till now and would recommend it to anyone who has even a passing interest in it.
This is just me voicing my thoughts about the ending specifically and is entirely my personal opinion and should not be taken as 100% fact.
This should also go without saying but SPOILERS AHEAD.
So I will start by saying what I did like about this final volume in the main story of Psycome. I liked that we finally got to meet Kyousuke and Ayaka’s parents and learning just why exactly they haven’t even tried to find them.
Kyousuke’s internal struggle about loving Renko and being almost prepared to be murdered by her was interesting at first. I say at first deliberately so more on that later.
Eiri finally going “dere” for lack of a better term was also a plus for me since I liked learning about her and her family in volume 4. This ended up biting me in the ass later on when I discovered exactly WHY she was given so much development.
I could be here all day explaining what I liked about the book but these were the ones that stood out to me the most.
Now for what I didn’t like.........
The last volume as a whole felt rushed. Reiko and Renji introduced only in volume 5 have very little to do with this story and are little more than plot devices. This being the case we never learn the full scope of Renko’s backstory or the Organisation aside from its interest with Kyousuke which even that was never fully explored. This REALLY could have used some fleshing out. The one month time skip may have been how they avoided this obvious important plot point. It was the perfect opportunity to learn more about Renko and to deepen her relationship with Kyousuke apart from “Renko almost died saving me so I love this woman” when before then he was terrified of being killed by her if he let his feelings known.
This part is a bit painful to write since I REALLY wanted there to be a happy ending for Renko and Kyousuke like they find a way to cure Renko and save her from her accelerated death rate then live together for many years before finally Renko kills Kyousuke like they always promised.
But its not my story and its not like the ending the author envisioned either.
My basic understanding of the ending is that during the Deadly Exit Exam for Kyousuke and Ayaka to drop out of Purgatory Remedial Academy, when the group comes across Renko she gets her ASS KICKED by Eiri. What? Up until now Renko was the strongest character in the whole story and now shes getting flat out destroyed by someone who couldn't even compare to her before. It makes no sense. Maybe Renko was weaker from using her limit breaks in volume 5?
Whatever the reason after this fight Renko goes from “Im going to kill you and Kyousuke whom I love” to “I’m entrusting Kyousuke to you” then lets them escape and covers for them “sacrificing” herself. This also makes very little sense. I understand that she wanted a “good mood” to kill him but in that case why did she lie and say she would come kill him after he escapes then not do it? Either because she dead or something isn't really adding up.
I cant help but feel bad for Eiri since Kyousuke obviously still loves Renko and yet they ending up getting together at the end. This is the most fucked up reverse cuck situation Ive ever seen. We dont know if Renko is alive or dead for sure, Kyousuke is with Eiri but its an almost entirely one sided affair and Eiri for some contrived reason doesnt CARE that the man shes with loves another possibly dead woman? It feels like the autor got a ton of fan mail saying they wanted Renko and Kyousuke to be together and another pile for Eiri. So in an effort to make everyone happy he makes it a fucking mystery whether Renko is alive and leave him with Eiri? Its so forced it makes me want to tear my hair out.
Despite these complaints I can still live with this ending even if I would have preferred more of a happy one instead of being bittersweet. Maybe I’m spoiled by the ending of Spice and Wolf but I can say with confidence that I have enjoyed my time with this series overall making it still one of my favorite light novel series I have read so far. And having said that I’ll probably do a full marathon of the whole series again if I get a long break over the summer.
