Probably not really...your more senior leaders just grew up in a different type of developmental scheme. They might be unfamiliar and unwilling to make changes and sacrifices to get the next generation to where they need to go. They'll capture this unwillingness in terms like “I don't know how to speak to millennials, or Gen X, or Gen Y, or Gen Z.” In reality, what this unwillingness means is that they don't feel comfortable holding them to the standard that they expect. Sometimes the best leaders you can find are the ones who think that they're comfortable, but are really searching for something they can’t quite define. They know their why but can't articulate it. At the same time you can see internal capability that is just ready to be developed and it will enable them to explode. There were a couple of guys that I had that were quite comfortable. Their outlook in the Air Force is what I term the “second assignment flyer syndrome.” That's what I call it… because it’s what they remember. These individuals remember being at the top of their game and their profession as an aviator. They were instructors or evaluators and they held a lot of legitimacy inside of their previous flying organization. When they came to our team for a completely different type of mission they were forced outside of their comfort zone. What they weren't seeing was the critical skill and thinking capability they were developing. This was an additive skill to put on top of what they had already gained in their legitimacy from their previous job. When you combine those skills and challenge them with responsibility to operate completely around the world (literally or figuratively), untethered by direct leadership, their credibility across your organization will grow. However, the “second assignment flyer syndrome” guys saw this development as doing a job. And just wanted to go back to where they were the expert. Funny thing…they weren’t the expert anymore…someone else had replaced them. Only through direct intervention was I able to focus them on the future rather than the past.
