So, you know in that infamous chat on Day 7 between the MC, Jumin and Zen, where Zen is freaking out bc Jumin is being lowkey horny in the groupchat ? Yeah, so, there's kind of a huge detail that was lost in the English version. At one point, Zen tells Jumin to take MC back home and adds "don't be pervy and make her stay", to which Jumin replies "Don't assume that all men are like you. But more than that, what do you mean 'pervy' ? I never had such intentions. What in the world is inside your head !"

...only to completely contradict that like 2 texts later (if the MC says she's glad he's not denying the fact that he did indeed have thoughts™, which again, is really weird to have as an option after Jumin supposedly says he "never had such intentions") by saying he's been having inappropriate thoughts ever since MC arrived.

Well. That's because that's not what he tells Zen in the Korean version. He doesn't say "I never had such intentions". This is how this part of the conversation actually goes.

Zen : Hurry up and take her home! This is an inappropriate hour to be with a lady! MC : I don't mind staying, though? Jumin : If MC wants to stay, then she can stay. Zen : What are you talking about? Even if she wants to stay, a real man should escort her home. Jumin : Why should I force her to leave? Zen : Because you're a man. Jumin : You shouldn't assume all men are like you. But more importantly, why do you keep calling it an "inappropriate hour"? Do you have inappropriate thoughts only after a certain time? I wonder what's going on in your head.

Jumin isn't wondering what kind of thoughts Zen is having. He knows. No, the thing he doesn't understand is why Zen keeps acting like men are supposedly only having thoughts™ after a certain time and that's really weird to him. And I swear ever since I played that chat in Korean, it's been living in my mind completely rent-free.

it’s so crazy that jumin was there for 17 hours as the longest time which means there were times he was there 15 hours, 10 hours, even one hour or 30 minutes is already too long. i wonder how that trauma affects him like..in his adult/teenage life

and i mean, we can see exactly how that trauma effects him now as an adult based off his BRE1: Jumin now views closed off spaces as a safe space.

it's kinda like how he used his mother's abusive words against him as mask i.e. when he was a child she would call him emotionless and overly-mature as a method to demean him. when he was little we saw him try to rebel against that assertion but as an adult, he uses those "facts" as a crutch so he doesn't have to look at himself and see how emotionally tangled and childish he is. it also doubles as a mask he can put forth so others don't notice how "different" he really is from others, especially since he wasn't given the proper space to acknowledge that side of him let alone identify it. i'm sure plenty of us fellow autistics can relate to that

similarly, the basement was a punishment for him. if you don't act normal->you don't get to be around others. it's horrible and traumatizing, even more so when we consider how young he was. but in a backwards kinda way, even though that punishment was 100% a bad experience, it also likely had the added effect of somehow relieving Jumin of his desire to keep up appearances. he's already being punished, and there's no one around to judge him for being the way he is. he's completely alone, but, free from judgment.

so in his BRE1, he flees to his "safe space", even if it really is just a punishment to himself, Jumin's learned to internalize the pain of loneliness as a lesser threat than that of the pain of otherness :' [

on another note, he himself seems to be keenly aware of how painful it is to be locked up. he mentions in his route(iirc an outgoing call?) how sorry he feels that he "has" to do this to MC. i bet with his trauma of being kidnapped/held hostage, it really compounds into 1.) this need to stay out of the public's eye and 2.) by extension keep his "things" out of the public's eye. the public is otherness. the public is danger. and while the basement/penthouse may be utterly lonely(read:painful), it is safe from what Jumin fears the most.

why i love Jumin + why he's one of the best characters imo

Even if we take away all the economic power he manages we could still find a good quality character. I usually see Jumin being highlighted for his wealth, but he by himself is a good-hearted, sweet and understanding person.

Jumin can take neutral standpoints to support others and give more logical or rational advice rather than emotional, as seen in some chats when problems arise. He shows a lot of concern (not so directly) with all RFA members and he even says that if they made mistakes, he would always forgive them.

Here are some examples:

SPOILER OF V'S AE: He was the first to try to give Saeyoung encouragement when he was about to give up after thinking Saeran was dead, who gave him a job in his company and accepted him for who he is.

SPOILER ZEN'S ROUTE: Despite all the conflicts he has with Zen, he never wanted to stop supporting him, offering him employment and took the time to go talk to him at his worst and clear things up between the two of them.

SPOILER ROUTE 707: This was hilarious in my opinion, but him caring about Yoosung missing his mother and him calling her was kind of cute, probably his intention was genuine.

The support he gives V is very touching, he is the one who remembers most of the things they did or happened to them, who trusts V even when his own intuition and RFA's trust fades, who always supported him and was there for him when his mother died.

Also, within the story he is an important character, as he is the one who handles the most connections and who can give the best financial support.

He tries to be informed about many topics, even if they are ridiculous and tends to be somewhat innocent for that very reason, he is very curious.

He is open to listen and understand, he is like that voice that reminds you of the reality but not only leaves you with the problem, but he always thinks of solutions, because he is very strategic.

HE IS AN ECOCAPITALIST AND LOVES ANIMALS, HELLO?
