What does it mean to be professional?

As a group we discussed what it means to be professional in our practice, it is important to follow these guidelines:

knowing how to correctly curate your work

promoting and advertising yourself successfully.

sorting own finances, responsible, self-employed

being able to talk about your work and explain it in a professional manner.

networking, being able to work collaboratively - e.g. other artists, galleries, technicians…

knowing your agenda - why you make work, direction.

using skill / experience to engage with the art world.

I have chosen to present these two of my drawings on a plinth. I think it captures the drawing in it’s best light, because it allows the threads the hang over the sides to take over and become a drawing on the plinth.

On Line: Drawing Through the Twentieth Century

On Line explores the radical transformation of the medium of drawing throughout the twentieth century, a period when numerous artists subjected the traditional concepts of drawing to a critical examination and expanded the medium's definition in relation to gesture and form.

I wanted this sculpture to demonstrate a chaotic drawing, with energetic lines going in all directions. It is a contrast to the straight block sculpture which shows a drawing of vertical lines.

These photos are from my studio space, when I was working on my sculpture. Each thread I placed into the structure is in it's own right an individual drawing. Every thread has its own place from which the line grows and had its own path. I simply place the thread into the gaps and let it fall. Using different coloured thread creates an energy throughout the drawing.

This is the largest sculpture I have made so far in my practice, I was encouraged to continue my work on a larger scale by tutors and other students in a cross strand crit I took part in. I cast a block of plaster and carved lines around the block, similar to a technique I used with clay. I primarily work with drawing the line in my practice and demonstrating drawing in space with sculpture, carving into the clay was the first part of this drawing.

Jeongmoon Choi uses light and thread to create amazing installations that play with aspects of perspective and illusion. Her fields of three-dimensional lines are installed in place and lit with ultraviolet light to create interactive environments. I find it interesting and inspiring how other artists play with the idea of drawing in space, and how they demonstrate the line using different medias.

In this drawing the line leaves the page, I want to challenge the norms of drawing by explore this idea of letting the line escape the page.

With this sculpture I have chosen to leave a large amount of thread unravelled away from the sculpture. I wanted to create the idea that the drawing could be continued, even sparking an interaction from the viewer to complete the drawing. The pile of thread creates quite a chaotic feel I think, and expands on the drawing. I am playing with the idea of 'drawing in space' in my practice so I wanted to demonstrate and ideal from this.

In the studio, experimenting with composition and perspective of my miniature drawings

I took these photos in the photography studio. I chose to take the photographs from different angles that were up close to the sculptures, I wanted to highlight the drawings created on the sculptures with the fibers and threads. Using the photography studio to take photos of good quality is important when working on the professionalism of my practice.

The line and movement of the thread can easily be manipulated between the sculptures to change the drawing and composition.
