Can we have Emily Prentiss and JJ with daughter reader being close to saying her first word and when they are at David Rossi for a get together she ends up calling him Nonno(Italian for grandpa) because we all know Emily is basically his daughter. And it makes the old softie tear up just fluffy please.
Summary: You had been on the verge of saying your first word for awhile and your mothers had been desperate for them to be it until a certain BAU Grandpa steals first.
First words were a big moment for any parent and of course, it was just a matter of what the first word was, or who it was. Just like most mothers, Emily and JJ were determined to make sure your first word was along the lines of ‘Mumma’ or ‘Mummy’. So when your babbling had turned to what sounded like the sounds of letters, they were just bombarding you with the word, making sure it really stuck in your little tiny head. They even went as far as whispering it in your ear as you slept. They were sure it was going to be your first word.
JJ was feeding you some mashed fruit before they left to go to Rossi’s, they knew you probably wouldn’t be eating for a while so they wanted to get ahead of things. JJ gently scooped up some of the purée onto the tiny silicone spoon, holding it up to your lips with a smile on her face. “Open up for Mummy, sweetheart! Can you open for Mummy? Mummy has some yummy yummy food for you!” JJ wasn’t playing when it came to getting you to say ‘Mummy’.
Emily chuckled softly, putting the cups of coffee she had made for herself and JJ on the table next to where your high chair was. She gently tickled your little cheek, lowering her voice as her tone changed to a playful and teasing one. “You’re just being a little cheeky girl, aren’t you? I bet you know how to say it! Mummy and I say it too many times for you not to have caught on.”
You just giggled and shook your tiny head, pushing the spoon away that JJ was still holding up to your little mouth. Emily was being so silly! Of course, you didn’t know how to say ‘Mama’ and ‘Mummy’ yet… maybe… surely? You just averted your gaze away from Emily, turning back to JJ with a loud unintelligible babble and a smack to your high chair tray, you didn’t want to eat anything right now and you were trying to make sure she knew.
JJ knew you weren’t hungry, that you probably weren’t going to eat the mashed-up baby food but she still wanted to try, she really needed you to eat something and even if it just meant trying to get you to take one more mouthful out of the 4 failed ones that you spat everywhere, that was good enough for her. “Please, sweet girl? One more bite for Mummy? Just one bite where you don’t spit it everywhere! Please? Just for Mummy, my sweet beautiful girl…” JJ had pulled out the puppy dog eyes to you with the fake pout, trying to convince you to give in to your loving mother. Though of course she was met with a firm shake of your little head and a silly spit with a cheeky smile. Only you won with puppy dog eyes.
Emily shook her head in amusement as she picked up the jar of puréed baby food that JJ had gotten out for you, inspecting the label closely. “Hey, I wouldn’t want to eat mushy…” She paused for a second to actually take in what she was reading, scrunching up her face in disgust. “Pumpkin and peas with… cauliflower?” She looked up at JJ and you, seeing the gross brown colour of the puréed vegetables dribbling down your little chin and onto your bib. “Alright, that’s actually disgusting, why did we buy this for her? Who thought that that’d be a good combo to put in a jar?”
JJ just laughed at Emily’s reaction, reaching over to pull off your little pink bib with one hand when you refused yet another bite, her other hand gently wiped away the mess of mushed vegetables that had accumulated on your adorable face from your spitting habits during eating time. “It’s healthy! Grows her brain and stuff, keeps her strong.“
Emily looked at JJ with a raised eyebrow, screwing the lid onto the jar and putting it back into the cupboard. “I’m sure we can give her other healthy options to grow her brain that don’t involve putting the poor girl off vegetables because the Baby Corporation decided that babies apparently don’t have taste buds.” She gently kissed your now clean cheek, ruffling your hair softly.
JJ just rolled her eyes in faux annoyance at her wife, a fond smile creeping up her face. She turned to face you, unbuckling your tiny frame from your highchair and lifting you up to place you on her hip. “Alright, messy girl, guess we’re done. You need a bath before we see Grandpa Rossi, don’t you? Don’t you?” She said with a high-pitched baby voice, tickling you under your little arm which elicited the most adorable little giggles from you. “Yeah, you do! You can’t be a stinky baby, Uncle Spencer doesn’t like stinky babies.”
Your whole bath time was just annoying scrubbing and Emily trying to get you to say Mama as she got you all squeaky clean. You stared at your mother as you sat in the tub, playing with your little mermaid dolly as you tried to wash its hair like Emily was doing for you, trying to copy the movements of her hands gently working some shampoo in your little tuffs of baby hair. You pulled at the toy’s hair happily, swishing it around the water as you babbled to yourself. Emily stopped massaging your little head as she heard your suspiciously letter-sounding babbles, moving to look you in the eyes quickly. “You are so close, sweetheart! Just try… Maaamaaa, can you say that? Mama! Can you say Mama for me? Mama.”
You just stared at Emily like she was humiliating herself, you were already so sassy and making your mummies embarrass themselves by trying to get you to say ‘Mama’ or ‘Mummy’ was your new favourite thing. You knew what you were doing. Your expression just turned into one of smiles, splashing the dolly into the water. Emily rolled her eyes affectionately, pointing a light-hearted accusing finger at you. “Don’t you give me that look, you know what you’re doing, cheeky girl. Tricking your Mummies, so cheeky.”
Everyone was dressed nicely for dinner at Rossi’s, especially your mummies who had taken hours in the bathroom at home just getting ready. Of course, you hadn’t been too crazy about it, especially when they had been getting you dressed, you hated that. But now you were in an adorable blue dress with little frills on the bottom and sleeves, your little bits of hair done up nicely as it had just been washed during your bath. Emily was trying to keep you happy on her hip as she chatted with Rossi, Hotch and Penelope, your tiny frame almost slipping from her grip as you kept squirming. You were being a wriggly little worm, tugging at a curled strand of Emily’s dark brown hair, which was still warm from the curling iron she used before they left. You were babbling loudly, trying to fight her attempts to keep you in her arms. Emily rolled her eyes, adjusting her grip on your tiny frame for the umpteenth time. “Y/N, no bubba, no more wriggling please.”
Penelope just cooed at you, gently tickling your little cheeks as she made funny faces to get you to giggle. Aunty Penelope was of course obsessed with you, you were her two best friends baby, how couldn’t she be so utterly smitten with your gorgeous face? “Oh, look at this beautiful dress you have on, Y/N! Surely your Mummies can let your Aunty Penelope gift you the brand new Glitter Sparkle Pony? It would go so well with your Glitter Sparkle Kitty!” Glitter Sparkle was a toy collection that Penelope had a secret love for so she had to get it for you obviously.
Emily and JJ absolutely hated that Glitter Sparkle Kitty toy, it was obnoxious and a parent's nightmare… they had tried to get rid of it but uh, you kept finding it. Emily shook her head firmly at Penelope, shooting her a look of “Don’t start”, even thinking about the toy was irritating her. “No, no more Glitter stupid Sparkle toys, no. Don’t even start Penelope, those things shed glitter like they’re a living dog, do you know how hard it is to get glitter out of a toddler's hair, out of your own hair? Or when it appears in your cereal?”
JJ, Spencer and Derek had come over to the group, wanting to see what was going on. Emily had passed you over to Rossi when her wife had handed her a glass of wine, taking a long sip with a side-eye to Penelope. Rossi was happy to take you from Emily and a smug smirk immediately appeared on his face as you stopped your wriggling and instead settled in his arms. “I prefer me too, kid.”
JJ just smiled affectionately at you and Rossi before turning to the group. “What are you guys talking about over here?”
Emily rolled her eyes with a sigh as the topic of Sparkle Glitter came back up, she was not a fan of glitter, especially when it came into close proximity of their house. “Glitter Sparkle Kitty and her new friend Glitter Sparkle Pony.”
JJ just grimaced and backed away from the group, she was not about to get into this. “I’m gonna go get another drink.” She spoke quickly, pointing over to the bar before speed walking over there to join Elle and Alex.
Penelope just huffed at your mothers before whispering something to you about getting you the Sparkle Pony for your birthday anyway. You were still chilling in Rossi’s arms, sucking on your pacifier as you babbled at nothing in particular. Rossi smiled down at you, gently stroking down some of your little flyaways as he rocked you side to side. “You’re getting good at your babbling, Y/N.”
Emily smiled as Rossi said that, taking another sip from her glass before nodding. “Yeah, she’s so close to her first word, so close, it’s just “Can you say Mama?” From JJ and I all the time. She’s probably so sick of hearing it. A lot of the babies in her daycare have said their first words so we’re just waiting on her. She’s been on time with all her other milestones so we aren’t that worried.”
Spencer of course, piped in with whatever statistics had popped into his head during this conversation. “Well actually, statistics show that more than 75% of babies say their first word by their first birthday but there was a study where only 7 out of 44 babies were caught speaking their first word after 15 months old. In fact, Girls tend to speak their first word sooner than boys!”
Hotch just smirked softly, he was incredibly fond of you, he was your Uncle Aaron. He gently stroked the side of your cheek which had probably been kissed and tickled countless times tonight. “Jack said his first word at 11 months old, it was Dada. Haley caught it on video.” There was definitely some pride in that small stoic smirk as he said that.
Rossi gave you a little kiss on the cheek, adjusting your tiny frame to be higher on his hip so he could see your pretty little face better. He shot a little glance at Spencer, not even surprised anymore. “She’ll talk when she’s ready, maybe she just wants Nonno there when she does.” He teased, poking out his tongue at them.
You yawned softly, gently trying to tug at Rossi’s beard as you got a little angsty for some dinner. You were getting tired and had yet to have eaten for the night, how unacceptable! You looked up at Rossi with the most adorable puppy dog eyes. That’s how you do them, JJ. “Noooonnooo! N-nonnooo! Nonno.” You hoped that would do a good enough job in getting people’s attention.
Emily’s head whipped around straight to you, her face frozen with shock, she knew Italian fluently, she knew that they mostly referred to Rossi as ‘Nonno’ to you or ‘Nonno Rossi’, well Emily and Rossi did, JJ just said Grandpa Rossi. You knew what you were saying, you were looking right at him when you said it! “Y/N what did you say? Did you say ‘Nonno’, sweetheart?” She turned her head slightly to call over her shoulder, her eyes never leaving you. “JJ! JJ get over here!”
Meanwhile, Rossi was trying to keep away the tears that had pooled up in his eyes, trying to blink them away which didn’t work very well as they just came streaming down his face. The old bastard was a softie. “You said my name! Yes, I’m Nonno!” He held your tiny body close, adjusting your position in his arms so he could see your cute little face better. “You said my name first!”
JJ had come over quickly, wine glass still in hand, she had thought something was wrong from the pure shock in Emily’s voice and the haste she wanted her to get over to them. “What!? What’s going on? What happened?”
Emily just grinned, peppering your gorgeous little face in kisses as she held your tiny hands. She turned to JJ, laughing in disbelief. “Wait, wait, just listen.” She turned back to you, gently tickling your little rosy cheeks to get your attention before pointing to Rossi who was still holding you. “Hey, sweetheart, who’s this? Who’s this, beautiful?”
You smiled tiredly, looking up at Rossi with those adorable big eyes of yours. Everyone was paying attention to you now, maybe that meant Nonno would give you some food. You were facing Rossi’s chest as he held you, not really being able to see everyone so you tilted your little head back to try and see your mummies and also Rossi at the same time. Your little high-pitched voice was too cute for words. “Nnnn…. Nonnoooo! Nonno!”
JJ gasped, her free hand going to cover her mouth in surprise, the thought of something being wrong leaving her almost instantly as she heard you. She couldn’t wipe the grin off her face. “Oh my gosh, Y/N! You smart girl, looking at you saying Nonno’s name! You’re talking!”
Of course, the rest of the team had heard the whole thing, Derek had noticed Rossi tearing up and he couldn’t help but tease the old man. He put his hand on Rossi’s shoulder with a chuckle and a smug smirk. “Baby has the old tough guy tearing up!”
You were a bit confused about why everyone was suddenly cheering and celebrating instead of giving you food, you had thought that surely Nonno was going to give you some after saying his name but apparently not. You frantically gestured to your mouth with your tiny hand, trying to indicate that your belly was grumbling and it demanded food right this second. “Nonno! Nonnnoooo!”
Rossi just laughed, wiping his teary eye with his thumb as he registered what you were trying to say and how upset you were getting. He quickly adjusted you against his hip again, making sure you didn’t squirm away to try and find “treats” on the floor before he started walking towards the kitchen. “Alright, Nonno will get you some delicious spaghetti! How does that sound? Much tastier than what your mothers are feeding you, they just don’t have my touch with the kitchen.”
You let out a happy little cheer, already grabbing at the pot that was holding the spaghetti. The moment you were sat down at the table with your little plastic bowl in front of you? You were diving in like you’d never seen anything more appetising in your life, Rossi argued that you hadn’t, no one had.
Emily laughed at your adorable messy face, she had already grabbed out her phone to take some photos of you. Of course, she couldn’t miss the opportunity to go in with her tactic and obnoxiously high baby-talk voice. “Hey Y/N? Y/N, baby! Can you say Mama? Say Mama! Maaa-maaa!”
You just grinned up at Emily, a fistful of spaghetti noodles in your hand, sauce all around your mouth. For one second Emily really thought you were going to say it. “Nonno!”
Laughter had erupted from the team at that, Emily dropping her head in defeat but she couldn’t resist the grin on her face because after all, you had said your first one and it made Rossi’s entire year, probably more to be quite fair. You’d say ‘Mama’ eventually but until then, Rossi would be basking in the brags that he was the only word you could say.
