Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day! Let’s hoist the Jolly Roger, break out the rum, and look back at the holiday’s timber-shivering history.
YAR!
"A few years back, when we hit the top of our, uh, smuggling game, she just appeared. And we figure, someday, she’ll just disappear."
What is this from I need to be watching it RIGHT NOW.
The Brothers Bloom - one incredibly awesome movie from the guy who brought us Brick and Looper. I am such a Rian Johnson fangirl.
30-day Book Challenge; Day 24: A book that you wish more people would’ve read.
→ (On The) Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta
“But grief makes a monster out of us sometimes … and sometimes you say and do things to the people you love that you can’t forgive yourself for.”
I recently had the opportunity to read this book and I just fell in love. I admit it, it had lingered on my bookshelf for weeks, a loan from one of the lovely ladies in my book group, and I just kept getting passed by for the next new shiny. I don't remember why I finally picked it up - maybe the knowledge that I would have to give it back eventually - but when I did, I just fell into the plot and world. Grief, and the intensity of how loss rocks your world, is explored with such skill. Marchetta respects the intelligence of her readers in ways I haven't seen in a very long time. Nothing is spoon fed, nothing is easy...but then, that's life.
Highly recommended.

Does anyone actually follow that ettiquette in England?
Because my understanding of tea ettiquette in England is: OFFER YOUR GUEST TEA AS SOON AS THEY ARRIVE - GIVE THEM THE LARGER MUG, BECAUSE THEN THEY CAN HAVE MORE TEA IN IT, AND MORE TEA IS BETTER - OFFER THEM MORE TEA AS SOON AS THEY HAVE FINISHED THEIR MUG OF TEA, BECAUSE MORE TEA IS BETTER.
IF SOMEONE LOOKS STRESSED, OFFER TO MAKE THEM TEA. IF SOMEONE LOOKS UPSET, OFFER TO MAKE THEM TEA. IF SOMEONE LOOKS TIRED, OFFER TO MAKE THEM TEA. IF SOMEONE HAS JUST COME IN FROM THE RAIN, OFFER TO MAKE THEM TEA. IF SOMEONE HAS JUST RECEIVED BAD NEWS, OFFER TO MAKE THEM TEA. IF YOU ARE WATCHING TV WITH SOMEONE AND THERE IS AN ADBREAK, OFFER TO MAKE THEM TEA. IF YOU ARE MAKING YOURSELF TEA, OFFER TO MAKE EVERYONE ELSE TEA. IF SOMEONE IS NOT CURRENTLY HOLDING A MUG OF TEA, DOUBLE CHECK THAT THAT IS AN INTENTIONAL STATE OF AFFAIRS, AND THEY DO NOT, IN FACT, WANT A CUP OF TEA.
TEA.

Just putting this in both places. Very cute.
A girl slowly reveals why she refuses to love.
“I’m not allowed to love,” she tells him, cigarettes on her breath. “Says who?” says he. “Says me,” says she. He nods and kisses her anyways, because she is so beautiful in her little red raincoat.
This is another requiem contest entry. One with genies. :)

The carnival only came in the summer, and so it was always summer to her. But Alette had never seen a summer like this one, a summer like Nathaniel.
The circus, the traipse, falling love, life and as a metaphor.
Posting this here as well
Once a year, the Seven Stations all dock together to share resources and celebrate the completion of another orbit. Evelyn’s sister, Annalisa, disappeared on a Summermeet two years ago. In searching for her, Evelyn finds more than she bargained for in the form of Fitch, a scruffy but charming station-hopper.
this is an adorable story - short and sweet - and great for fans of scifi (or scifi-lite)
A Recite reflection series by Jamie Uy, for T.
Just thought I’d experiment with typographical motivational writing. This series is meant to be viewed cohesively, and was inspired by the my favorite Science video of all time - “The Most Astounding Fact - Neil deGrasse Tyson”. Go watch it!
lovely.
