So I watched the end of Mandalorian season 2 and I thought:

”I can’t leave things like this, with Din and Grogu separated. Oh, hey, I know, I’LL JUST WRITE A SHORT LITTLE STORY TO REUNITE THEM“

And then this happened:

Summary:

Din is no stranger to pain. He’s been shot, he’s been stabbed, he’s been beaten unconscious. He’s fallen from too high and broken too many bones and more than once nearly died for no good reason.

But this… Watching the Jedi take Grogu away...

It’s like his heart has been yanked through his beskar, all his internal organs carved up and carted off, only a hollow empty ache left in that warm place where the kid had lived.

And yet this is the Way...

This is a story of bounties and battles, of unexpected meetings with old friends, and of the making of new allies, as Din travels the Outer Rim Systems after giving up The Child.

It's a story of (unintentional) self-discovery and (accidental) fame, Din stumbling sideways into realization and revelation, as he learns what it means- for him- to walk the Way of the Mandalore.

Contains joyful reunions, action, feels, and found family, with a happy ending all around.

Post Season 2. In Character. Canon compliant.

Adding some details on why this is such a good fic! It has amazing characterization all around. The plot absolutely slaps: Din meets so many families and misses Grogu. He contemplates what The Way really means to him and figures out that he can live his life according to his own set of rules and still honor his upbringing. Also, Din gets a mini van (his new ship).

Fantastic artwork. Great coloring of the two blades. A truly beautiful rendition of a dream scene.

  I LOVE the idea of Luke and Din sparring together, so much that I wrote a few scenes of them doing so in Each Morning Sun A New Adventure (Gen, 50k).

… e x c e r p t …..

Sparks fly with every clash of their blades, the low hum of the Jedi’s green lasersword a sharp contrast to the high warbling of the Darksaber.

Fifteen minutes they’ve been sparring, and already Din’s arm muscles are screaming, his legs are aching, and his hands are sweating in his gloves.  

It’s the best training session he’s had in years.

Sweat shines on Luke’s face too, his hair sticking to his forehead as he deflects Din’s latest attack, shoving him backward as he stumbles back himself.

They circle each other once again, blades in ready position.

“Getting tired?” Din pants out.

“Not at all,” Luke says, breathing hard.  “You?”

Din shakes his head, and tries to will his racing pulse to slow.

“You realize I can tell when you’re lying,” Luke says, wry as a Corellian. 

“You’re favoring your right side,” Din informs him.  “Might want to work on your technique.”

“And you’re reusing the same attack patterns too often. Might want to change things up.”

“My fights don’t usually last this long.”

“Neither do mine.”

“Can’t imagine why.”

Luke laughs and twirls his lightsaber.

Din smiles in the privacy of his beskar, and advances again.

Some of the men yall tag as dilfs are SHAMEFUL. I was looking for dilf memes (it is not important why) and all I see is a parade of rosy-cheeked unblemished dandy men. Slapping a beard on a 26 year old in a suit is not a dilf, you are besmirching the title. There is a recipe, a Dilf Recipe. You do not need all these ingredients but you must have AT LEAST three: a child/ward/apprentice of some sort, crows feet, laugh lines/frown lines, sun damage, gray hairs, dark circles, Depression, intriguing battle scars/injuries/missing limb, Divorced, body hair, a look in the eyes that screams for A Moment of Relief, etc etc. Like the bar is low. Ben Barnes is not a Dilf. Harry Styles with 5 o’clock shadow is not a dilf. TIMMY CHARDONNAY IS NOT A DILF. You are all WEAK your blood is WEAK put that man BACK IN THE OVEN UNTIL HES DONE THESE DUDES ARENT AL DENTE THEY ARE CRUNCHY AND DUNKED IN WATER PUT THEM BACK LET THEM COOK

Din Djarin, for example, exhibits 8 of these things. Quite high on the DILF scale.

But then, so does Luke Skywalker… so perhaps there should be some weighing of these things.

Meta and spoilers for TBoBF S1 E5 ahead.

Been thinking about the level of craft that goes into creating Din Djarin as a character.

Opening scene of TBoBF Ch. 5, my immediate reaction is not “Yikes, very scary man doing deeply violent things for basically no reason.”

It’s, “Oh dear. He really needs a hug.”

What makes that happen?

I’m still figuring out the the inner workings of the writing. More on that later, probably, when I have fully formed thoughts.

Right now, can we talk about how Pedro Pascal does Din's voice?

As a writer, I can hear dialogue in my head and write it down, but I don’t think I could make the sounds come out of my mouth right if you paid me a million dollars to practice. So—what is he doing, exactly, and why does it work so damn well?

How does he manage to make Din sound childlike and like a fully grown adult at the same time? The adult part, I think, is this: He doesn’t rush his speech, no matter the situation Din has gotten himself into. He also doesn’t stumble, and he doesn’t pause to search for words. (Except for the very intentional change-up in that one scene on Morak.) It implies both confidence and competence.

But then, there’s the thing with the thank yous. Quiet and earnest and prompt, like a well behaved child among grown-ups. And the way he tends to pronounce words so carefully, using all the consonants and vowels. As if Din’s not quite comfortable with them yet (even though he’s presumably been speaking Basic for, what, 40-something years).

I think inflection is a key part of what’s happening, too. It’s not that the tone and volume don’t vary, but it’s subtle. Small differences from one word or phrase to the next. On one level that makes Din sound tough—I don’t need to expend energy on you. But there’s something Pedro does with it, that I’m still trying to figure out, that also makes him sound tired. I don’t have any energy left to spend on you.

I don’t know, I don’t usually think this hard about the craft of acting, but I’m really impressed.

If any actors out there have better insight, bring it on. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I had the same reaction (after the squeeing and gasping, that is) - he really needs a hug. ;_; It’s in the way he already starts out the scene sounding weary. There’s some magical quality in Pedro’s voice where it cracks or breaks, just a little, at the moments where he’s conveying exhaustion, frustration, pain. You don’t hear it as much in interviews, so I’m not sure it’s fully natural. Wasn’t there something in the documentary from S1 that showed him screaming into a pillow to make it hoarse? So I think he’s seeking out that quality that makes his voice rough and ready, but also makes it sound worn and threadbare when needs be.

And then, yes — the writing choices of economy of language (I am constantly having to leave things out or erase them when I write his dialogue, to make him sound more spare), the combination of looming threat and quiet, almost shy politeness. Remember how ill at ease he was in Sorgan, with Omera’s kindness? He met it with all the politeness you mention, but boy you could tell it discomfited him even as he appreciated it.

It’s late and I don’t know where I’m going except to say, damn, I missed him!

I think that one of the biggest draws to Din's character is his restraint. You can hear it in his voice and you can see it in the economy of movement. One of the biggest shocks in the opening of ep 5 was how unhinged Din looked when dealing with the bounty. My first thought was "oh shit he snapped!" watching the complete dismemberment of that entire room. I feel all the actors do a great job with economy of movement. Watch the first episode of Mando -- he takes down everyone around Mythrol quickly and I guess maybe tightly? (I don't know the best way to describe Din's movement, I just know it when I see it.)

Also at the end, he was limping. Have we ever seen him look that bad after a fight? I feel like he had it more together even after getting his bell rung on the cruiser!

I think part of it is that given the lack of facial expression due to the helmet, there has to be serious voice and body work to show expression. Without, Din is a blank slate and there is very little to allow us to relate to him.

And we all can relate to him because by now I think we can all relate to being too tired to expend energy on people.
