Narcissa giggled, thankful for her âlessonsâ with Barty. It made it easier to pretend that the ring on her finger didnât weigh as much as the entire reputation of the Black family name. This shouldnât be my job!!!!, she wanted to yell. But she never would. Instead she just giggled again, a smile following shortly after. âOh I doubt it. In fact Iâm suspicious that he may be sending whatever comes to his room to mine, I swear one of these things around here had his name on it.â She flashed Eleanor a grin. âSomething I ought to get used to, eh? Dealing with his things,â she giggled again, a hand hovering over her lips. âAt least my heart skips even when I read his name.â
They faced the lake. She remembered as a child thinking theyâd named the body of water after her family. It was, in her eyes, large and beautiful, just like their family. Wouldnât it only make sense for that to be the case? She quickly learned that it wasnât, but as time went on it only made more and more sense. After all, the lake was deep, ominous, it hid things that would terrify most, unless youâd learned how to turn off the fear. And she had. She thought she had. But she was terrified, still. She listened to Eleanor apologize as the water rippled and she actually paid attention to the girlâs words.Â
She was quiet for a moment, not having much to say in response. âI donât know what Iâm suppose to say, Eleanor. Iâm not going to act like it was okay that you sympathized with him. I could have said anything and it wouldnât have excused that.â She took a deep breath, stared at the reflection of the sky on the lake. âWhatâs done is done,â she said before looking at Elle with a smile. âI appreciate your apology, and would love to go back to being good and I mean really truly good. But I canât say I love you back. I havenât been taught to let my heart feel that so carelessly. I care about you, I do and thatâs more than so many people can say, but Iâve only ever said Iâve loved three people, and I donât want to lie to you. Iâm sorry.â She shrugged because she hoped maybe this was the nicest way to go about it. âI still want you to be my friend.âÂ
As the girl reached into her pockets, she looked at what she had and almost took a step back. âWonât I get sick?â She couldnât imagine what it may feel like, but she knew her friends had been on such things and she didnât think it would go very well for her. âI mean, what if someone laced it with something? Or what if someone comes up to me and asks questions that I answer truthfully on accident? I canât get in trouble, Elle. Not with everything thatâs happening.â
âWhat a coward.â She teased, copying Narcissaâs laugh, âAnd Iâm sure if we were to ask him, heâd claim to have allergies or something!â Eleanor knew that few people were happy about having their marriages arranged, but if two people were ever bound to marry one another anyway, it certainly seemed like Lucius and Cissa were that lucky pair. âThat definitely all bodes well. Iâm sure he feels the same about you.â She grinned encouragingly. After all, whether or not Narcissa liked it, the wedding was happening... might as well be enthusiastic about it, right?
Eleanor shook her head, having prepared for that. âYou donât have to say anything, Cissa. You never even have to forgive me for it, because it was... terrible. But you deserve to know how much I regret that choice.â She nodded understandingly and tentatively took Narcissaâs hand. âI want to be truly good as well... and I donât want you to say you feel something that isnât there. I do love you, and Iâm alright if you donât feel the same way back, especially since you do care about me. Donât apologize for it.â A soft squeeze of the smooth palm in her own. âI want to be your friend as well.â
âYou wonât get sick.â Elle promised, a comforting smile on her face paired with an honest look. âThatâs why Iâve brought you all the way out here where hardly anyone goes. We can see anyone that comes and move away. And I swear to you it isnât laced with anything. I trust the person who gave me this immensely, and I watched him roll them. Like I said, if you donât want to risk it, throw it in the lake... But it will do nothing but relax you, Cissa. Itâs meant to be enjoyable.â She pressed the first blunt into the younger girlâs palm and pulled a packet of matches from her pocket offering one to her.
