I agree that it’s WWII, because aside from the Browning and the Jeep, that’s much too small to be one of the last true T-Rexes, which were definitively wiped out in the battle of the Somme. 

It’s probably a Nanuqsaurus Hoglundi – they’re similar but smaller so it’s easy to make the mistake. N. Hoglundi, known to soldiers as Hogs, were used for light artillery up through 1954, when PETA (Paleontologists for the Ethical Treatment of Anachronisms, no relation) got on the military’s case about it. The last Hog to serve in the military died in the Brookfield Zoo in something like 1979, I think?

Here’s a taste:

Living in such close quarters is difficult. Asked whether the experience left her with any close friends, Heinicke was diplomatic. “Um, well, three of them I’m definitely going to stay in very close contact with,” she said.

Reminder: there were six crew members.

quiddity: “The essence or inherent nature of a person or thing.“ Source: Re-read of @maggie-stiefvater‘s The Raven Boys. (I missed it the first time around!)

kenning: “A metaphorical phrase used in Germanic poetry (especially Old English or Old Norse) whereby a simple thing is described in an allusive way, such as ‘whale road’ for ‘sea’, or ‘enemy of the mast’ for ‘wind’.” Source: This post on Old English words and phrases.

See Maps of Fantasy Worlds Created by Bots

A fantasy-novel-inspired Twitter bot generates a new map of fictional lands every hour.

O’Leary came up with the idea in November when he participated in NaNoGenMo, or National Novel Generating Month. It’s a twist on National Novel Writing Month, which since 1999 has challenged writers to complete a 50,000-word novel in the month of November. Instead of writing words, NaNoGenMo participants write code that generates a 50,000-word “novel.”

“You're trying to make a computer write a novel, so you're looking for the most formulaic novel you can think of. And so I was thinking about these fantasy novels, and they always had these maps inside the cover,” O’Leary says, “So I started thinking, well could I make one of those maps?”

EAGLECREST was founded in 1776 by Betsy Ross. Its motto is “E Pluribus Whoop-Ass.” Quidditch at EAGLECREST involves no broomsticks, is scored by the number and quality of violent magical tackles on other players, and takes six to forty-three hours to play. The sport that other countries call “Quidditch” we call “Ringpop,” and it is VERY unpopular. The heads of house are Mindy Kaling, the ghost of Eugene V. Debs (who famously campaigned for the rights of ghosts to retain their positions even though they are dead, but is under considerable student pressure to step down on account of being an old white dude), Martha Stewart and Snoop. EAGLECREST is located inside Mount Rushmore.
