like ok just, namjoon used to be ignorant as hell and wanted to change the world without understanding just how bad it was, you know? the dreads, that Godawful perm from debut era, the n word fiasco, and the other shit he’s pulled. he pissed off a lot of people with that (and rightfully so; i’m still pissed when i think about those things, even despite everything) but it’s so obvious that he’s gotten past that now.
he’s looked at his mistakes and learned from them and moved forward, and i’m so proud of him. he’s finally getting to make the kind of music he loves with the right message in the most respectful way anyone can, and that means so much to me not only as a fan who’s watched him grow as a person and an artist but as someone living in the same world as him and dealing with a lot of the same issues he talks about. one of the things i personally do to try and better myself as a person is to learn from my mistakes and do better, and that’s exactly what i see in the ‘change’ collab. none of the things are new things he’s talked about (but i’m so goddamn glad he hasn’t stopped talking about them, they’re so important) but this is such a far cry from where we started.
namjoon’s stayed true to himself while becoming a better person, and god, i’m so proud. not to mention he’s making amazing music and collaborating with amazing people on top of that! like, fuck, i don’t know how to articulate just how great this entire thing is, but i’m really proud of namjoon and change is what i’ve been waiting for a really long time from him. the fact that he did this with wale on top of that is great too, because they have amazing chemistry when it comes to music and they both respectfully used their platforms to talk about what’s affecting them in this shitty world and support each other.
like my friend miri said, “I think it’s cool to imagine Wale and Namjoon sitting down and talking abt the problems they see in the world and how to effect change (…) what a wild convo that would be given their different backgrounds and experiences I would kill to be a fly on that wall”
i’m so proud of namjoon. he’s improved on himself and learned from his mistakes and change is the sum of those efforts, and i can’t wait to see more. the fact that he talks about these things in the first place in an industry that would prefer Anything Else from him means even more, because it shows he really does care about what he’s singing about.
like i know this is just a rambly mess but fuck, i love him. i really do. i really can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next. i’ve never been prouder.
