Cody ducked his head with a quiet laugh.Ā
āAdmittedly, I think heās under the impression that I need help in every department,ā he said, already knowing Dylan would have his head for playing a hand like that. He shouldnāt start off declaring how much he was lacking, not in front of a pretty blonde that he had no doubts his friend would deem radically acceptable. But Cody had always been far better at being self-deprecating than bigging himself up.
At least his occupation helped to present the illusion of attractiveness. Cody had come to learn that there were very few people out there who didnāt get starry-eyed about firefighters. He could look like damn near anything and the FDNY badge on his uniform would do everything to make him at least a little appealing.
The grin froze on his face when Ellie mentioned Dylan. Quickly, he tilted his head in confusion.
āDylan?ā he asked faintly, knowing that in a city like New York there was a slim, slim - actually near impossible - chance that they were talking about the same Dylan. But wouldnāt that be just Codyās luck? For the pretty blonde he was talking with to be someone the other pretty blonde in his life knew?
The thought was shattered in his mindās eye the moment it crept into his head. A wave of bullets took it down and he quickly buried it in the sand. Vain as his Dylan was, heād have no qualms about being called pretty. But Cody couldnāt think of him that way. He shouldnāt even be thinking of Dylan as his anything.
It seemed like the woman in front of him hadnāt taken too much notice of the way he had stumbled over her innocuous use of his best friendās name. Why would she? Normal people didnāt react like that. Cody awkwardly cleared his throat, shifting in his seat as he tried to recalibrate the situation into something a human being with his trademark faulty wires could still claw his way through and come out reasonably unmarked on the other side. Who knew that a man who had crossed warzones could handle that better than a regular conversation? He really hoped Dylan wasnāt looking his way right now.
Thankfully, the woman across from him was graceful enough to smile when he told her he had a son. Normally, most women did a double take, wrinkling their nose a little and then forcing a pleasant expression onto their face to mask their horror. At the very least, knowing the woman in front of him also had a kid of her own was a relief. Not enough to make Cody completely relax, but his shoulders inched down ever so slightly. It was enough for now.Ā
āYeah. Walt. Heās ten,ā he smiled fondly, fingers itching to pull out his wallet and show off the various photos of Walt he had tucked away inside. He knew most people didnāt really care to see that sort of thing though, whether they were parents themselves or not.
āAh,ā he nodded when she clarified that the Dylan she was talking about was her son. What were the odds of that?
āThereās nothing wrong with⦠sorry, hallmark romances?ā he asked, a curious smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. āIs that different from regular romances?ā
Feeling a little brave, he rested his arms on the table, leaning in. āDo they have a lot to say aboutā¦ā He gestured vaguely around them with one hand. āThe like, I dunno, merits of speed dating or something?ā
Ellie was completely and totally charmed by the nameĀ Walt. SheĀ wasnātĀ sure why, but something about it was soĀ regalĀ andĀ old fashioned, but in a way thatĀ didnātĀ make her want to run in the opposite direction. Her bright smile was genuine as she directed it across to Cody, hoping that her legitimate interest might help put him at ease. It was hard going for single parents, so she suspected he might be feeling just as out of his depth right now as she was.Ā
āTen?ā EllieĀ liftedĀ her brows in surprise, the smile on her face stretching wider. SheĀ knowĀ sheĀ probably soundedĀ judgemental, but there was something so pleasing about knowing his son was a similar age to Dylan. She had always faced a lot of judgement for having a kid so young, and CodyĀ didnātĀ look too far in age from her, so there was something comforting in knowingĀ thatĀ heĀ mustāveĀ been a young dad too. That, or his skincareĀ routineĀ was to die for!Ā
āI was a young mom,ā she clarified,Ā realisingĀ too late that he might assume she was being rude. āItāsĀ just nice to knowĀ IāmĀ not alone. Solidarity, and all that.āĀ
With her words, she lifted a fist, as though to sayĀ weāreĀ in this together, andĀ immediatelyĀ regretted it. A blushĀ colouredĀ her cheeks as she scrunched her nose, knowing that her tiny students would be giggling something chronic if they could see her now. She just hoped ReidĀ wasnātĀ alsoĀ looking.Ā
Luckily, Cody was much too charming for her to dwell on her own misgivings and seemed to be navigating the conversation a lot better than she was with easy distractions. She laughed at his question, shaking her head.Ā
āNot exactly, just... Lower budget,Ā badĀ dialogue, and... obscenely addictive?ā SheĀ offered withĀ a shrug. Reid had fallen victim to many of her ridiculousĀ movie nights, and Ellie found it so sweet. HisĀ favouriteĀ sub-genre right now seemed to beĀ Flirty Rogue Secretly PinesĀ ForĀ Beautiful Lady, and sheĀ couldnātĀ help but find it adorable.Ā Maybe thereĀ was a secret romantic inside of him, waiting for the right woman to unveil it!Ā
She gave his follow up question some thought and laughed, enjoying the sweet way heād leaned in. Cody was exceptionally charming, sheād decided.Ā He was handsome beyond compare and, if the laser-focus look on Reidās face as he appraised the other man when she shot him a sideway glance was anything to go by,Ā sheādĀ seemingly hitĀ the jackpot.Ā
āIĀ havenātĀ seen any that cover speed dating, butĀ maybe theyĀ havenātĀ found the right subjects yet?ā Ellie blushed, also leaning forward, just a touch. Was she flirting? She wasnāt really sureĀ howĀ to flirt, but she hoped Reid would be proud. And that Cody didnāt think she was totally nutty.Ā
