Final Critique | IXD304
Our final critique today Kyle give me a couple more suggestions of what to change. He suggested that I double check that everything was lined up on each page, so that way when going through the content it would all line up when switching through the pages. He also advised I add a little line under the titles to make them more clear as a title like below;
Measuring Mr Holmes | IXD304
For my Measuring Mr Holmes page we had the option to either use suggested content that Kyle provided us with or to make up our own content. I had a search online and found this post from the guardian with content about Sherlock Holmes on it which would be perfect for the page and used some of the data in my pages.

Critique | IXD304
Today we had individual critiques with Kyle which were super beneficial. Here are some of the pages from my original design I created of my prototype:
In the group crit Kyle and Alex suggested that I add more colour to my design as it would give it more depth. Seperating the different sections by colour would also help a user differentiate between my pages of my ebook. Because of this I changed my colour palette to the one below:
Kyle also suggested that I go on Creative Commons and search for Sherlock Holmes and add an image in super low resolution so it was barely noticeable to the background of the heading pages to give them more depth. This was a great idea which turned out great:
Kyle told me I should simplify the pages and remove the little lines I had added to create a unique look to it. However I agree that once I removed them and stuck to a consistent theme on each page the overall visual was much more pleasing.

Updated design:
Kyle also told me that my buttons were far to big on my designs and to go away and look at other button sizes on normal apps. I realise my buttons were far to big and then made them much smaller as you can also see above. Overall I’m super happy with all of these changes.
Critique | IXD303
For this class we had a one to one critique which was extremely helpful in giving me ideas on what I could add to my project. Paul gave me some great suggestions. This was what my original design looked like when I showed it to him.
Paul first advised me to add in all real faces on my customers section as I had just stuck in a wee silhouette of a face in the picture. He said this would make it a lot more realistic. I agreed.
He also suggested that I add a menu at the bottom of my page and not just on the first home page, which I had never even considered. But once I changed it it made such a massive difference to the prototype.
He also made the final suggestion of adding a real map onto my map page to make it look more realistic. I thought this was a great idea too as I wanted the app to appear as realistic as possible.
Guest Lecture | Week 7 | IXD304
In todays lecture we had a guest lecture in talking to us called David Henderson, about the company DHD. They are a design company and on their website it states:
“We are a team of passionate, friendly creatives: logo designers, illustrators, interaction designers, developers, film makers, animators. A team who combine a mix of skills, ideas and hard graft to create amazing work for over a decade.”
The Design Sprint | Week 6 | IXD303
Today in class we discussed design sprints and how they can benefit a product when you are creating it. For our task Paul asked us to create a Design Sprint on the question:
“How can we make choosing and applying for an art and design-based university course an easier process?
In addition, how can we ensure a greater percentage of portfolio submissions?”
From this we created a user journey map in order to try and work through some of the problems people applying to our course may have.
The idea that our group came up with was create an app/ website where students can:
- learn what the course is and what work they'd be doing
- see others portfolios
-easily apply and have a step by step process
Have a testimonial section within the website to give the audience an idea of how the past students thought of the course and how successful they are now.
Big typography; More visual than written; Processes as well as High resolution mockups; Companies students have entered after the course; salaries of potential jobs; potential jobs.
And finally a lot of visuals explaining the course as students mightn't understand IXD terms.
Visual Grammar | IXD303
This is my visual grammar for my IXD303 project. I want the colours to be blue and orange theme with very playful simple font.
Branding of our App | Week 7 | IXD303
For todays lecture it was a critique where Paul was looking at everyones branding to see what they had done so far.
Peak End Rule | IXD303
People tend to judge a peace of content on how they feel about it at its peak and at its end.
In order for you to find this peak point you should Pay close attention to the most intense points and the final moments of the product. You need to identify the moments where your product is most helpful to the user, and then design to delight the end user. It is important to remember that negative experiences are easier to recall in a person mind than positive ones, so you don't want to give them any sort of negative user experience.
Content Design | Week 5 | IXD303
We looked at a lot of different branding today and how they style their content, which was very interesting and helpful. For next week we need to have a pdf of our branding and the ideas we have so far, along with paper sketches or wireframes.
Creating content Is such an important part of creating a digital project, in fact it is one of the most important parts to really pull a product together.
“ Users depend on copy to interact with apps and other products. If designers don’t know how to write well, the final product – be it a physical or digital one – can suffer as a result.”
—FastCoDesign”
Content can take plenty of different forms, text, images, video and data.
“95% of the information on the web is written language. It is only logical to say that a web designer should get good training in the main discipline of shaping written information, in other words: Typography.”
—Oliver Reichenstein”
Branding First Draft | IXD303
For my brand I have decided to name it Carers Kit, as I think that would be a perfect fit for the type of app I am trying to create. For the monogram I was thinking of using a simple, CK but I haven't fully decided on the colour palette yet. This is the testing I have done so far.
Then for my visual mark I want it to be some sort of friendly looking backpack with a face on it as I think that would match the brand. This is what I have created so far.
I am toying with the idea of having my brand as blues and oranges, however I haven't fully decided yet. I also think for my visual mark I will remove the harsh blank lines and make it just contrasting colours to break up the image more.
My Product Idea | IXD303
I have finally decided on an idea of what I want my product to be now that we have separated from our groups. My product I want it to be an app that benefits carers that travel to peoples homes and help them. I think this would be a great tool as I have multiple friends who are carers who I think would appreciate an application like this.
I asked some of my friends what exactly their daily tasks are as a travel carer to get a better idea of the user persona I wanted to create. This is what my friend Patricia said about her everyday tasks:
She starts by getting ready and checking her routa to see who's home she is visiting today on her shift. Once she arrives at her first call she takes the client to the bathroom and helps them wash up. She then dresses them. Once they are dressed she takes them downstairs and asks them what they would like for their breakfast, she then makes the clients breakfast and checks If they need to take any medication.
Once this is done there is a book that you sign and write the date, what time you entered the house, a description of what you have done and then what time you leave at. Then if the client takes medication there is a separate sheet for medication and you write the date and the medication. This is for legal obligation so that if anything was to happen the social worker can look through the book and check if the medication was given and what service was provided to the client. You then move onto the next clients home.
I thought it was really interesting her telling me all of this as it really gave me An idea of the type of app that I wanted to create for the likes of her and other home carers.
After learning all of this I was able to create a user persona on the type of person that I wanted my app to be targeted towards.
Millers Law | IXD303
Millers Law states: The average person can only keep 7 (plus or minus 2) items in their working memory.
From this information we can take away;
1. Don't use 7 to limit yourself unnecessarily when designing because of this law.
2. Organise data and information into smaller chunks so that users can process it a lot easier, and understand and memorise it.
3. And that short term memory capacity varies per person.
Sketching Interfaces | IXD303
Today we did a quick drawing task, as our lecture was about how important it is to start on paper first when designing.
“Sketching is not about being a good artist, but about being a good thinker.
—Jason Santa Maria”
Needy Patterns | IXD303
There are two types of “needy patterns”,
One of them tends to be the “ please don't go” pattern which is where boxes and exit popups appear as you try to leave the site. These are the number 1 most hated marketing technique out there.
The goal of them is to catch users before they leave the site. The logic of these popups is that the user is trying to exit the site so it doesn't matter if these pop up annoys them because they are planning on leaving anyways. This is not true however. People regularly switch between tabs, and a site can not tell the difference between a person leaving the site and just breifly switching tabs to come back later.
The other needy pattern is the “get back to me” browser. This pattern doesn't affect the user at all when they are on the page or when they are trying to leave, instead it reacts when a user has left the page but still has the tab open somewhere on their computer. The goal is to grab the users attention with a message appearing in the tab saying something like “don't miss out...” etc, but still it never seems to work.
