Fine……. If you insist……….
No, I will not shut up about the self ship community using yume terms and how they shouldnt, UNTIL people do stop using them. I wont shut up until there's a general internet-wide consensus that using yume terms is not okay and is indeed racist and everyone calls it self shipping. You should not be using these terms for reach, you should not be using these terms to become "popular," you should not be thinking that yume terms are "cuter" and "better" and "more appealing" (because, again, tell me why a Japanese term is "better" and "cuter" to you?)
Like i feel im going crazy whenever someone argues as to why they feel they should use yume terms. If you use them, i will and cannot interact with your self ship. Its not a yume ship, its a SELF ship. Like we should still be asking people why self shipping only became a trend and "popular" once they found a "cute" Japanese version of it.
I don't think that's how this works???
Genuinely whenever a new term is found it's because it's more "trendy" or whatever.
The same argument literally applies to the word "larping" or "larp" that people use to describe someone as a loser, because it's more "in trend". When the word " larp" means live action roleplay.
I don't find someone using a new term as racist JUST because it's from another country. That doesn't even make sense??? I treat it like slang basically???
I am not the person to go to for this...
Honey bun i have no idea what you're talking about.
Yeah, you are NOT the person to go to this. (its orientalism. Self shipping has been around for decades, and has only become popular because people found the yume term. A Japanese term. With that in mind, tell me why its not racist?)
Ignore my other miss clicks.
1: do not call me "honey bun", you are a STRANGER. Lets keep it that way.
2: I absolutely hate arguing. But
Yumeshipping is just another form of saying "selfship" but people also like to use it as a way to say platonic or familial, as with self shipping, you cannot.
Yume also means "dream" based of my research. Yumejoshi, Yumedanshi or even Yumehito depending on the gender generally means Dreaming girl/boy/person.
I do not find it racist just because its a term that came from Japan. People often find words with previous different meanings or the same meanings and tend to use it to basically make the old terms "outdated" (at least by how I personally view that.) Which is basically the whole "larp" argument. Because again, larping didn't mean "poser", it meant " live action role playing", but because people didn't like the term poser (I guess? Dont see anything wrong with it.) They just decided to water down a different word, or use a different word for an entirely different meaning.
Yumeship is a FANDOM term. They refer to the same core. They have the same meaning. Just because it came from another country does not make it racist. It doesn't make people racist. This just makes the entire community look bad. And it already looks HORRIBLE because of non-sharing harassers, harrassing their doubles and sending terrible fucking death threats, saying that "F/O Loves me more" etc etc. YOU don't have to call it yumeship. But don't call people racist. It's just flat out RUDE, especially if you're targetting this to basically a minority fanbase who definitely aren't racist and just like term, especially now since it's more popularized. I Garentee that there's a good chunk in the community who aren't even aware that the previous term was even "self ship" in the first place. They aren't using it to be evil, they aren't using it to be racist, they're using it because it's a popular term, that is already being used and recognized.
Question for you random stranger, and this is technically still on topic here, would you say the same thing about this other term, "Kawaii?" It may not be AS popular, but people still say it. I'm just saying.
Ask yourself why a concept with an existing lexicon of terms only found mainstream success when it adopted a Japanese term instead. Kawaii is different in that it is a word that refers to “cuteness” in the context of its language of origin (ie with specific reference to what Japanese pop culture identifies as such) as opposed to being strictly synonymous with “cute” generally. There can definitely racist undertones to its usage depending on the context, but “yumeship” and “selfship” are terms with identical definitions, usage, and context. For the record, self shipping also includes platonic relationships, so there is no actual difference which would warrant a different term besides finding it “cuter” and therefore more palatable to a general audience — which stems from orientalist sentiments about Japanese culture.
