A child was just another checkmark on an invisible list that made a so-called successful life, that much she know from an early age. Ellisonâs parents were archaeologists who were always off on some new adventure to discover relics from a time long since past. It wasnât that she was an unwelcome distraction to their work, not exactly; but she was more of a mostly invisible accessory to what many would consider decent life. When they were home, they certainly acted like the parents all her friends had. They were loving and funny, doting on their little girl. And when they werenât there, nothing. No contact at all. As she grew up, the time they werenât there gradually became far more than the time they were there. She spent her early years in London, being raised by an aunt who traveled back and forth from Paris to take care of her when her parents were away for long periods of time. Eventually, she became sick of the travel and how it was affecting her job and relationship and insisted they make a decision: either stay home for their daughter, or let her stay permanently with the only real parent sheâd ever known. They chose the first option, not that Ellison expected anything different; they were nothing if not completely dedicated to their work. She was packed up within a week and off on a new adventure, she liked to tell herself. A couple months later, after the formal adoption had gone through, they received the news that her uncle had been chosen to journey through the portal due to his military experience. And then just like her parents, Ellison were destined to explore a new world.
Elli was eleven when they made the journey through the portal during the Second Pilgrimage. Everything was still unfinished and dangerous, but her aunt and uncle always made sure she were safe. And more than that, they made sure she always knew that they would be there for her. Once things became safe with the walls finally up around the colony, her aunt established The Spot, one of the few locations that offered some semblance of the future. It was a safe place, one her aunt created because of her. Elli had always been more comfortable with quieter locations and had found more comfort reading in a corner than being in the center of the action. This was a way for her aunt to provide another measure of safety for Ellison. Elli began working in the coffee shop when she was sixteen though she had spent the past three years there anyways. Her aunt was determined that she should have as normal a childhood as possible, but finally relented when Elli brought up the fact that she would need to earn credits in some way, and she might as well work in a place she loved. One short year later, her safe and happy world cam crashing down. Her uncle was killed in a skirmish with the new outsiders in when they took Outpost 7. Elli had always believed that the colony was safe from anything; theyâd survived coming to a jungle filled with dangers. Theyâd survived the two years until the walls were finished. He wasnât supposed to die from betrayal form someone heâd considered a friend. It took her and her aunt a long time to move past his death, but eventually they returned to some semblance of normal.Â
Over the years, Elli gradually began getting more and more responsibility in her auntâs restaurant. She liked working in The Spot. It allowed her to get to know a good portion of the colony while providing a service she was good at. It was much preferable to working outside in the gardens all day. And of course, when everything seemed perfect once more, tragedy struck her life once more. Her aunt died of a heart attack. Her disease had run in her family, but sheâd never expected to lose her aunt so early. And just like that, she had lost her entire family and had gained a business sheâd never anticipated gaining so early. They were supposed to have years for Abby to train her. But instead, Elli was twenty-seven with barely an inkling of how to run the place by herself. She depended on the help of some of those older and wiser than her for help then, knowing she couldnât have done it by herself. In the two years since then, Elli found that she was good at running it even though she still finds herself intimidated by the responsibility sometimes. Â
Though Ellison has tried to understand what could lead people to what to want to leave the colony, she just canât. She canât understand what sort of disloyalty could lead to leaving willingly or betray the colony and its people so horribly to be banished. She knows how lucky they are to have this opportunity to rebuild mankind in a new world and hates those who have wasted this chance. She doesnât entirely understand what happened with the portal just yet or what it means for those in the future or those in Alia Terra. She just knows that it isnât good for their community.
