Final Manifesto
Manifestation Development
Manifestation Ideas
For my manifestation I thought I could call upon what I learned in the audio/visual paper regarding creating mood and atmosphere with images and sound. In this case I would be wanting to abstract and carry the user through the emotion and mind state of panic as this will be my main call to action in the manifesto.
There is a lot of evocative language and visual metaphors in my written manifesto and I was thinking of capturing this using abstract textures and a multitude of colors in motion. The images themselves will likely be generated using images of the media I am consuming at the moment - movies, music, books etc - as means of communicating that the things, people, media we surround ourselves with inform our lives and work whether consciously or unconsciously.
For the audio I am thinking about using voice samples from some of this media (ones exploring panic in some way hopefully) and creating a dizzying and cyclical soundtrack that plots the ups and downs and ultimate conclusion of the panic process. This approach should ultimately tie in the drug/magic/dance metaphors as well.
Manifestato Draft & Thoughts
To be a magician quiet the storm. Don't talk from the sidelines now. You're not good enough to be an asshole. It's only cool if you can get in it. Panic is inspiration. Increase your panic intake. Sacrifice. Art is a selfish sport. Drawing is magic. Don't get complacent / scared. Your art is not precious. Comfort kills creativity. Leave nothing for the swim home.
This is a pretty unorganized collection of my notes combined with some of the ideas that have come out of my reading. It's fairly broad as it stands but hits most if not all of the key ideas I want to communicate. Im thinking about breaking it into a few short paragraphs that each explore a side of inspiration eg. it is not external, it is an unconscious process, power and danger of panic
Manifesto Research
Finding Inspiration
Sommerville's article cites inspiration as something that is "all around us", in paintings, architecture etc. While I think this is true I think that it's quite a basic interpretation of the concept and the article goes on to talk about "taking time to be inspired" therein implying it is a cognitive process that requires time and work. This is the idea I want to take a stance against.

The Concept of Inspiration in Thoreau's Poetry
This dissection of Henry David Thoreaus's poems actually offered some really interesting philosophies on the subject of inspiration. The excerpts cited in the article were abstract and thinky, which is an approach I would like to take with my written manifesto.
He talks about inspiration as a mostly internal, 'mystical' process. One that requires observation and a relationship to the mind. He talks about recounting and memory as unconscious triggers of inspiration and brings up the paradox between the dependence of artists on inspiration and the necessity of being independent.
Sound and silence were important to Thoreau, which are ideas I've kind of hit on with the "to be a magician quiet the storm" line.

Others for final consideration
Best of Shoot Three
In the third shoot I continued to pursue the critical perspective formed in phase two, that there is no comfort or joy to be found in the private urban environment. I did this by trying to capture the manufactured nature and design of the spaces and the discomfort of its inhabitants. I noticed a lot of clocks popping up in the photographs which I thought added an interesting dimension to the concept - this idea that time is the ruler or the driver or this mysterious element that causes discomfort and pressure within the working environment. I also ensured that I captured them from a unique perspective (ie not looking up) so as to give the viewer a different view of the subject than they might be accustomed to.

Best of Shoot Two
Phase Two
In "Taking a Line for a Walk" Raymond Lucas mentions that theorist Walter Benjamin believed and strived to show that there is joy and comfort to be found in the urban environment. This line immediately jumped out at me because after reviewing the photos from the first two shoots and thinking back on them all I could think was "theres not a lot of happiness here." Everyone seemed uncomfortable, unhappy. And this I think can be traced back to the environment, one designed for efficiency not pleasure. Like I observed in phase one it was usually either sterile or a horrible mess, hardly comfortable or "joyous." I think this is also captured and exhibit through the uniforms, lighting, division of space, posture, expressions etc. This then will be my critical perspective, that there is no joy or comfort to be found in the private urban environment.
