Here are the final collages that I have created using my own photographs of the Barbican alongside photoshop to digitally collage them together. The process was quite strenuous as some photographs worked better than others within the collage so it was quite a trial and error process to see what would work best with what image. Overall i'm very happy with how these have turned out as my photoshop skills prior to this had never dealt with collaging. I think the 6 images are aesthetically interesting. Each image combines only 2 photographs to create the overall outcome.

Above is just a small unedited example of the photographs I took at the Barbican. Along with these I will use the other photographs I have taken of the area to use for my digital collage.

BARBICAN

I have decided to base this collage series on the Barbican. I find this area an architecturally interesting and aesthetic place. The architecture here is brutalism and I think that the shapes, construction and layout of the estate will lend itself well to being digitally manipulated and changed. The area is predominantly concrete with large white tiled 'boxes' protruding from the top of the main exhibition centre. I find these visually stimulating and would be great to layer over other images when I start the digital collage process.

I have reblogged some work by other artists/photographers who I feel inspired by such as Louis Reith. I enjoy the way he cuts and then repositions parts of an image to create something new.

MATERIALITY

For this project I have decided to incorporate both collage and architecture into my work. I like the idea of taking a photograph and then digitally manipulating and repeating the image to create a more abstract representation of its self. For this I will need to practise with photoshop to fine-tune the skills I need to create these images.

LOCATION SHOOT

I decided to choose an art gallery; the Tate Modern, as the location. I thought that this would be an interesting and some what new place to use as a setting as it is a place where you'd be more likely to photograph the art and sculpture, rather than a person. The building itself is architecturally outstanding and interesting however the main turbine hall had a very limited source of light and I had decided not to shoot this project using a tripod so I was not able to do slightly longer exposures to make use of the light that was there. This sadly was also the case for the other exhibition rooms within the gallery, however they had slightly more available light so I chose to shoot in them anyway.

I told my subject to walk round the gallery how you would normally. I didn't want to intrude and create posed images. Instead I followed her discreetly and photographed from a distance. I feel that making her pose for the images wouldn't create the natural look that I was aiming to achieve with this shoot. This resulted in many more 'unusable' photographs than if I had asked her to pose, however the ones that I short listed to be the final images I feel, have the relaxed, un-tense feeling that I was aiming for.

Editing the images wasn't as straight forward as I was initially expecting before the shoot as the location had limited light which gave my images a very orange hue and a less sharp overall look. To fix this I lightened the images and placed a blue filter over them to counter act the orange which seems to have been successful. I did add a slight hint of sharpness to the images however due to the low light the images couldn't be sharpened to a level that I'd consider as perfect. Overall I am pleased with the images apart from the sharpness however I know how to rectify this if I were to shoot this location again.

Philip-Lorca diCorcia - From the Series ‘Heads’, 2000-01.

‘Heads’ is a great example of DiCorcia’s uniqueness and originality, the series was created in Times Square, New York. DiCorcia attached a strobe light to scaffolding on a subway, he then set up a hidden camera to secretly capture the people who became highlighted by the strobe lighting. The results are truly stunning.

The lighting is highly effective, giving the images his trademark cinematic feel. The portraits appear as if they are stills from a movie, which is even more impressive when you consider these portraits are not staged in any form. It is striking the way the lighting appears to isolate the subject, leaving the rest of the image dark and sparse giving a sense of the ‘unknown’ to the photos.

"Hustlers," his best-known series, is the most well-represented, with 14 large and small shots of mostly young men strutting their stuff along Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. Made from 1990 to 1992 and funded with a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. DiCorcia has labeled each portrait with the man’s name and age, the city he came to L.A. from and their going rate.

Here is a really interesting blog featuring street portraits that I discovered. I enjoyed the black and white photography and the overall aesthetics of the photographs. For my 4 analogue prints I would like to take inspiration from these and try and incorporate similar compositions into my own work.
