blonde locks drape over face as they read over the various files on screen . deciphering evidence , breaking firewalls that would be considered illegal if discovered … but that was another little secret that could be erased and denied till the end of time . phone buzzing and buzzing , images of you nephew sparking a smile with giddiness as you marveled in his adorableness .
reaching over , phone shoved into the brunette’s face as you invaded their personal bubble , “ look jet ! ” high pitched southern accent seeping through even though effort was made to make it less obvious , “ ain’t he the cutest little baby you’ve ever seen ? ”
dark hair frames pale features as she types, eyes rimmed red from the hours she spent awake working on one of her newest art pieces. not paintings this time but more . . . abstract sculptures. elliot noticed them the first time he had come to her for help, but the collection had only grown since then.
eyes immediately shut as savi’s phone is shoved in her face, jet instinctively leaning away from the close proximity. “why are you shoving a phone in my face with such enthusiasm at 8 AM, milani?” jet waits until the light from savi’s phone has been noticeably reduced before she opens one eye, the other soon following. “yeah, adorable until he tries to rip out an earring.” it’s said casually, no hint of a joke. “is that your kid or something?”

“ you don’t have to be afraid to come in, you know…” the mother of five hums quietly through closed eyes, a sixth sense telling her that one of her children had been hovering around the entrance to her hospital room. she turns as best as she can towards the door in her hospital bed; never had she imagined she’d be fifty years old with two broken hips, not to mention a whole cacophony of other injuries she couldn’t exactly remember right now. “ elizabeth, ” kathy coos gently, using as much strength as she can muster to wave her daughter over, “ come here sweet girl… it’s going to be okay…” her voice hoarser than she’d expected.
lizzie had been waiting nervously by the doorframe, the sight of her mother causing panic to rise in her chest. she would never forget visiting her mother after eli was born, this fear an unfortunate familiar feeling. it isn’t until liz hears her mother’s voice that she lets out the breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, a tear escaping as she sets her purse down on the chair nearest to her. “ mom ... ” she bites hard on her bottom lip to try and keep the tears she could feel building at bay. “ hi. ” lizzie brushes some of the messed blonde strands of hair off of her mother’s face with the best smile she could muster before she takes her mother’s hand into her own. “ i think you should just avoid cars from now on. please, for me? ” lizzie rubs her thumb over kathy’s bruised knuckles, voice cracking; she really was the spitting image of both kathy and elliot. “ c’mon, it’ll be fun. i’ll walk everywhere with you. ”

it wasn’t supposed to be like this, they weren’t supposed to lose their mom until they were older. they were supposed to be going out to dinner as a family, not planning her funeral. all small seed of anger directed at her father settled in the pit of her stomach, but she wasn’t about to go around playing the blame game, at least not quite yet. glancing over at the younger blonde, a sigh escapes kathleen’s lips, “ c’mon, let’s go, ” she mutters quietly as she climbs off the couch, the restless feeling growing exponentially as they sat in their father’s near silent apartment. “ i texted aunt diane, come with me to go pick eli up from the airport… being cooped up here isn’t going to help anything, ” she finishes softly, offering a hand out to her baby sister. “ mo and dickie are talking to father hogan about the arrangements… dad’s off doing whatever he’s doing, ” her nose curling out of irritation.
lizzie had settled into the chair in the far corner of the room as she twists the ring their mother had given to her for her sixteenth birthday ‘round and ‘round her pointer finger. she hadn’t spoken much, instead choosing to let herself fall background to her other siblings. she hadn’t told anyone besides dickie that she was the 911 dispatcher on the other end of the call that was made as a result of the car bomb detonating that ultimately murdered their mother.
liz can feel kathleen’s eyes on her before she speaks, and she only sinks further back into the plush chair, a sniffle as she reaches for the pillow next to her. “ i don’t want to go anywhere. ” unlike her sister, lizzie found comfort in being in elliot’s apartment, holding onto the hope that he would be back soon. lizzie wipes at her face as eyes lift to kathleen, bottom lip starting to wobble. “ what are we supposed to say to eli? ” liz eyes her sister’s hand, a sigh escaping as she closes her eyes momentarily. “ i know you’re mad at dad but i can’t deal with that right now, katy. i just ... ” i want mom feels childish, and a child she is no more. so instead, her eyes fall to her hands. “ what time is eli’s plane landing? do we have time to get something to eat? i’m - i think i’m hungry. ”
