I've seen many comments talking about Shakira's accent (specifically on her recent video with Gerard's grandmother). It seems like some people are upset with her having a Spanish/Catalan accent. She's been living in Barcelona for 8 years now and is pretty much married to a Catalan... why do people care so much??? Am I missing something??
People are just being petty tbh. Theyâre taking it as if adopting another accent means that sheâs neglecting her Colombian nationality, which is ridiculous. There are just some accents that are stronger than others, and are easier to pick up. The Spanish accent for example, is very strong, just like the Argentine accent, so itâs only natural for Shakira to pick up the accent after living with Gerard in Spain after so many years. If you listen to her speak during her beginning years she definitely had a recognizable âCosteĂąoâ accent, but that accent isnât as strong or thick as the âpaisaâ accent. She also moved out of Colombia when she was about 18 years old and lived with an Argentine for about a decade and now has been living with a Catalan for 8 years so its safe to say her accent has been manipulated a bit but thatâs really something that happens naturally and nothing to do with her thinking sheâs better than her compatriots, which unfortunately, is where this petty nonsense stems from smh.Â
